Gish plays a young woman who leaves her 6 year job as an ER nurse. It happens because she overstepped her bounds of authority by taking over when a young intern froze as he was to give directions for the care of a gunshot victim that had just been brought in to the ER. Though she saved the man's life, she was going to be suspended for two weeks without pay. Instead, she quits.
Because of that blotch on her record the only job opened to her, unless she is willing to "relocate to Nova Scotia", is a temporary position at a treatment facility for victims of traumatic brain injury. Ethan Embry plays Rick, a resident of the center on whom she has a particular impact. His father is played by Ed Begley, Jr. Though he seems to be embarrassed by his son's condition and unwilling to believe they can help him, his real reason for being reluctant to believe his son can get any better is not revealed until near the end and it surprised me.
Through it all Gish's character is dealing with her own issues--an ex-husband who seems to be trying to buy their son's love with gifts, her Uncle has offered a job to Rick at his pizza/sandwich shop (an arrangement which Rick's father does not like), she must decide whether or not to stay on at the center, and then there is the treatment center's doctor who is, of course, interested in her, but must overcome her reluctance and Rick's jealousy. This jealousy creates some interesting twists in the story.
I am no expert on TBI, so I don't know how accurately everything is portrayed, but it seems to take a sympathetic (though maybe simplistic) look at what TBI can do to an individual and to those who love them, and how to face the obstacles it creates in the lives of everyone concerned.
It was family friendly and interesting. The dynamics between Embry and Begley were well played and I felt that overall it was well done. I may not put it at the top of my list of 4-star movies, but I could recommend it as a good evening's viewing. Due to the subject matter, it is not the most light-hearted of movies, though there are funny moments.
