Jonathan Creek: Season Three (2009) Review

Jonathan Creek: Season Three (2009)
Average Reviews:

Series 3 of Jonathan Creek keeps up the high standards of the first two series. The writing and plots are as ingenious as ever and Jonathan solves the mysteries with his usual diffident brilliance. There's lots of humor and Creek's boss is involved a little more, too, which is good.
The only downside is that Caroline Quentin doesn't seem to have the same gusto and enthusiasm as Maddie that she showed in the first two series. She was replaced for season 4 (by Julia Sawalha of Ab Fab), so perhaps she'd just found that she had no more to bring to the part. She's professional enough, but the outrageous chutzpah is missing.
Never mind, the show is still well worth watching. I'm not sure whether a new series is planned, but there have been several one-off specials, including one this past Christmas, and hopefully the BBC will release those in due course.

I was still presently surprised to find this DVD watchable, and even enjoyable, as an adult. The show did incorporate actual elements of ancient Egyptian culture and history in a fairly accurate manner. So it was educational as well.
And my six year old son (also inclined to be an Egypt freak, due to his mother's teachings) has dubbed this "My Favorite Video Ever." Though, to be fair, he tends to be a bit fickle about these things.

Degrassi: The Next Generation - Season One (2002) Review

Degrassi: The Next Generation - Season One (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sadly, I must say that I'm probably considered an old guy to most of the reviewers of this "Degrassi: The Next Generation" boxed set. At twenty-eight years of age, I'm probably twice as old as most of these folks. But that doesn't matter because I really love this boxed set. I grew up watching the original Degrassi shows on PBS in Louisiana. Though the cast was roughly two years older than I was, I found myself relating to a lot of them. The new series allows me to catch up with some of my old favorites, as well as introduces me to a new crop of kids going through that great life-changing period we know as junior high and high school.
This new DVD set brings us the first season of the new series. Many of the kids are still pre-teens in this season. We are introduced to Emma, J.T., Toby, Manny, Ashley, Paige, etc. We're also introduced to some of their parents. One of the parents is very familiar to us old folks. Emma's mom is Ms. Nelson, or Spike, from the original show. She'll become quite close with Emma's media immersion teacher, Mr. Simpson. Once again, the old folks will probably, recognize Mr. Simpson as Snake from the old show. Another returning favorite is Joey Jeremiah. You'll remember him as the goofy kid that wore a fedorah. Many of the older castmembers show up for a class reunion at the end of episode two.
The new cast is fun to watch. It's funny how kids these days still deal with many of the same problems that other teenagers deal with. Everything from sex to drug abuse to first loves is dealt with. There are a few new trials and tribulations these days, however. One such temptation is internet romance, which gets Emma into a sticky situation. Another subject dealt with is Ashley having to come to terms with the fact that her father is gay. Though homosexuals have been around forever, I think that this is the first teen show that deals with this particular situation. Spinner is on behavior-controlling prescription drugs(ritelin, forgive the spelling). Jimmy uses those particular drugs to give him an "edge" at basketball. J.T. and Toby check out a little internet porn and, as usual, those blasted parents catch them. These are just a few of the "newer" problems that are addressed on the show.
Some of the problems that have hampered teens since the dawn of time are addressed as well. Toby crushes big-time over Emma, who is captivated by Sean. Sean, meanwhile, comes from a busted, alcoholic family. Paige manipulates her friends to get what she wants. Terry is overweight and thinks that no one will ever like her. Liberty fears failure in the classroom, etc., etc. What you get is a teenage soap-opera that deals with real issues.
Granted, some of the "problems" are hokey and 100% cheese, but this helps break the intensity of some of the dramatic moments. The acting isn't superb, but it wasn't with the original show, either. What you end up with is a program that teens and pre-teens can watch without feeling like they are being preached to or lectured. The characters are believable and they deal with their problems in the same way as any average kid would these days.
The DVD extras are fun. There is karaoke, where you get to sing the theme song. There's a casting call section where you get to see some of the youngsters try out for roles. A blooper reel is included, and some deleted scenes as well. One of the best deleted scenes for us oldsters is one which catches us up on a lot of the old characters from the original shows.
I recommend this boxed set to anyone who wants to relive the old days of their youth. More importantly, I recommend this set to teachers and parents who want to teach their kids without having to hammer a speech down their throats. Kids connect with the characters on this show, and that makes life a little bit easier to deal with once they realize that they aren't the "only one" who has to deal with any of their particular teenage problems.

Top Gear: The Complete Season 10 and Clarkson: Heaven and Hell (2009)
Average Reviews:

I love Top Gear, I watched almsot all of the episodes from the first season in in 2002.
Top Gear Season 10 is very good, but the DVD isn't as good, the original airing of season 10 is better than this DVD.
The problems are:
1. News segments are non existent or missing, there is maybe only one episode with the Top Gear news.
2. The music, Top Gear season 10 had great music in the original UK airing, on the DVD all the music is replaced by a bad music probably because of copyright issues with the original music, no matter the reason, this reduces the enjoyment of the episodes.
3. Region 1 DVD, why would you make it a region 1 DVD? Should have made the DVD region free.
4. No extras as far as I can tell, there's only the show, no behind the scenes, no special commentary, nothing, it's just the show.
Imagine Jeremy Clarkson reviewing this DVD, he would point out it's flaws with no shame.
Overall Top Gear season 10 is fun to watch many times over, the cars are great, Jeremy Clarkson is hirlarious, despite the DVD flaws I'm happy I bought it because the video is in good quality and the show is really good.
I wish they will make more seasons available in DVD and hopefully the future releases will be at least as good as the original airings.

Top Gear is the UK's premier motoring show. Consistently BBC TWO's most-watched programme, it attracts audiences of nearly four million each week. It could be said to be ultimate boys' club, but also one that through its tone and style is accessible to everyone - 40% of viewers are female. Irreverent, witty and unbiasedly honest, the Top Gear team, led by Jeremy Clarkson, take cars to the limit and beyond to find out if they're any good or not. Full of stunts, challenges and special features, Top Gear is self-deprecating, inclusive and passionate - there no boring stats and impenetrable conversations about camshafts and tire pressures. Instead you get authoritative information, entertainment and style. Jeremy Clarkson, host of Top Gear, brings you Heaven and Hell, a critical review of the best and worst cars in the automotive world. Clarkson trawls the whole of "car-dom" to bring you seven great cars and truffles the undergrowth looking for seven automotive disasters. The good ones the Ferraris, the Porsches and the Aston Martins are driven to within an inch of their lives on the track. The bad ones are killed. Sawn in half. Hung, drawn and quartered. Theyre hammered and blown to pieces with dynamite and their skeletons left in the open to rot. Theres even some time for a game of car jousting.

Sons of Anarchy: Season One (2008) Review

Sons of Anarchy: Season One (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Shield may be lamentably gone from TV, but prominent alumnus Kurt Sutter seems to have taken it upon himself to carry on its legacy with Sons of Anarchy, and if the show's first season is any indication he's more than up to the task. Anyone who enjoyed The Shield's combination of intelligence and testosterone will certainly find a lot to like here, as SoA quickly established itself as among TV's most unique and consistently compelling shows and only got better from there. Striking a near-perfect balance between grit and sensationalism, it takes viewers through a world marked by violence, double-dealing, and racial division, with an emphasis on the ambiguous morality and personal and familial baggage that come with a life lived between the straight world and the criminal one. The machinations of the characters and the twists of the plot are almost operatic, but the show remains rooted in the harsh realities of gangland.
The premise is sort of Hamlet-meets-the-Sopranos: youthful biker and new dad Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) finds himself trying to balance work with personal life as the Vice President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcylcle Club Redwood Original (aka SAMCRO), a gun-running biker gang co-founded by his late father and now run by his stepfather Clay Morrow (the ever-swaggering Ron Perlman), who's married to Clay's widowed mother Gemma (Katey Sagal, in pretty much the biggest departure possible from her Married With Children days). From the somewhat hippie-ish beginnings envisioned by Jax's father, SAMCRO has evolved into a criminal powerhouse, especially in their central California base of Charming, where they're practically a small-town Mafia. These guys may not be as bad as the Hell's Angels, but the show makes it clear that they're far from harmless nonconformists, as we see them running guns, committing murders and (in one particularly stunning scene) burning off the tattoo of a perfidious former member. Single-episode plots focusing on the gang's efforts to turn a profit and stay out of trouble are expertly mixed with longer arcs dealing with the constant conflicts of gangland life and the mounting tensions within the club. As the season progresses, it increasingly develops into a battle of viewpoints between Clay's world-weary cynicism and Jax's (relatively) idealistic leanings and pangs of conscience, which leads inexorably to a conclusion that already has me drooling in anticpation of season two.
In another welcome parallel with The Shield, the show's writing gets progressively more complex and nuanced as the season goes on, giving the cast, a nice assemblage of recognizable (but not household) names, a lot of room to work. Further cementing his status as Hollywood's leading Jewish tough-guy actor, Perlman is impossible not to watch as Clay, the club leader who walks a fine line between toughness and ruthlessness. Clay's a classic antihero in the Tony Soprano-Vic Mackey mold, whose occasional moments of decency don't quite compensate for his myriad of bad acts, but he's practically a softie compared to his wife. Taking the concept of standing by her men very seriously, Gemma's the very picture of steely determination, willing to say and do anything to safeguard her family, and she shares both Clay's ability to perceive all the angles and his lack of reservations in doing what needs to be done.
For his part, Jax is certainly no saint, but he hasn't quite been won over to the Machiavellian value system championed by his mother and stepfather. Constantly tugging at his conscience are the newly-discovered writings of his late father John, a somewhat intellectual type who didn't necessarily intend for the club to become a crime syndicate. The voice-over narration of John's journal is a bit of a contrived device in a show largely devoid of them, but it does nicely frame the struggles that come to define the season. This season also sees a succession of great supporting turns from recognizable faces--Jay Karnes as a twisted ATF agent with a thing for Jax's ex, Mitch Pileggi as a vicious Nazi meth lord, Ally Walker as an enjoyably amoral Fed who vows to take the Sons down--that only serve to up the entertainment quotient. Even the law-enforcement officers--the shady, compromised Chief Unser and the more principled, by-the-book Deputy Chief Hale--eventually emerge as multi-dimensional characters in their own right.
Overall, it's extremely difficult to find fault with this season. SoA seems to have flown under the radar a bit while shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad get all the acclaim, and while those are both great shows I think SoA easily holds its own as one of the best on TV right now. If it maintains its level of quality in season two, we viewers could have yet another all-time great on our hands.

While a different introduction through us all out of loop with the first episode only featuring three rangers instead of five that all gets settled. The Crimson and Navy Thunder rangers have arrived, but they're not here to play nice. Two step brothers out for revenge against the rangers mentor for the demise of their step parents. I'm glad they introduced the Thunder rangers early in the series because they saved the show in my opinion. The first three episodes of the series worried me. They were just to different from the other series. Blake(Navy Thunder Ranger) takes a liking to the Blue Ranger which is interesting. The whole love interest is kind of a new approach. Sure there has been feelings between two space rangers and two time force rangers, but that was more adult like. This new fling is between two kids still attending school and have mediocre jobs. There hasn't been anything like that sense Mighty Morphin. As for Hunter (Crimson Thunder Ranger) seems to be the more hard core of the two nothing imparticular comes up about him. With the three original Ninja Storm Rangers incapable of defeating these two rangers the plot of the show draws fans in more.

Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series (2009) Review

Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Machinima, for those unaware (a group that included myself until a few moments ago) is the process of using a video game engine to produce cinematic visuals. Somehow this apparently red-hot trend has managed to completely elude me until my on-a-whim purchase of Terminator Salvation The Machinima Series on DVD; it was recommended at the time of purchase of the Terminator Salvation DVD so I figured what the hey...
Broken down into six individual episodes, Salvation the Machinima spans a single DVD packaged within a standard clamshell case and comes in at a runtime of 74 minutes. Extras include a Making Of featurette and a profile segment on lead character Blair Williams.
Though unrated, the picture consists of standard-fair science fiction action, violence and occasional blood splatter (all animated of course).
The story goes something like this: Two years before the events of the Terminator Salvation motion picture (2016), Resistance member Blair Williams finds herself a survivor of the events of Judgment Day, basically running ground missions when not piloting a fighter plane. Her most recent assignment has her tracking down a "ghost"; a presumed machine responsible for the Resistance having temporarily lost communications. To her surprise her target is in fact a fellow human survivor who, through hacking, discovered an inherent flaw in the machines' short-range communicators that allows for disturbance when his algorithm is activated.
Though her orders are to eliminate the target, Blair finds herself in a situation of disobeying for the greater good of humanity.
The plot's pretty interesting and does a solid job in painting some colorful back-story to one of the primary characters of Salvation. A nice tough was the inclusion of the vocal talent of Moon Bloodgood, who happens to play Blair in the film as well. She nails the role with the requisite monotone narration required of all of the Terminator's leading ladies. Chalk it up to accurate scripting, but at times the opening narration of each episode could very nearly be coming from Linda Hamilton herself.
The prose is quite action-laden throughout with no shortage of gunfights, hot pursuits, and big explosions. Like in the film, the T-600 is the primary assassin choice of the machines while Aerostats and Hunter Killers (HKs) fill the post-apocalyptic skies.
As solid a story in summation, the pacing is a bit erratic with some episodes chalk full of action while others drag on with seemingly little plot progression. In all the prose manages to succeed but it would have been nice to have the option of playing the episodes in one continuous 74-minute feature as the episode breaks have the annoying habit of popping up just as the going gets good.
Visually the film is a bit of a mixed bag. The background textures are impressively detailed and some of the mood/ lighting looks as though it could have been lifted and transplanted right from the Salvation film. However, the character models are a bit stiff and cobbily animated throughout. Mouth flap detail is at times downright painful and even the enemy robots look a bit too, um, robotic. However, such things are to be expected when using an engine that was designed to produce video game visuals in filmmaking I suppose. The positive spin on this is that visuals rendered in a fully 3-D gaming environment provide directors with the ability to literally decide which "camera angle" works best for each and every single shot. Once all of the virtual pieces are set into place, viewing a given scene from every conceivable angle becomes a reality. As such, the direction is nice and tight, with well-framed shots and some unique perspectives.
In all, Terminator Salvation The Machinima Series is an interesting little prequel that ties pretty neatly into the film much in the way the Animatrix was integral to the Matrix trilogy. Of particular interest was the concept that the machine weakness discovered by the Resistance in the beginning of Salvation's origins can be traced back to Machinima's plot. Additionally the bonus material included acts as a nice perk to DVD holdouts who forgone downloading the episode clips from iTunes, Amazon, X-Box Live or to their Sony Playstation.

"My name is Blair Williams. I fight for the Resistance." The resourceful A-10 pilot from Terminator Salvation has her own story in this kick-'bot prequel filmed via the innovative Machinima process that turns video-game elements into a full-blown animated story. Moon Bloodgood reprises her T4 role, providing the voice of Williams as she takes on an explosive mission to track what or who is disrupting comm links during the Resistance\'s fierce guerrilla war against Skynet. T-600s emerge, guns blazing. MotoTerminators patrol post-Apocalyptic L.A. Aerostats hover. Hunter Killers rain death. Machinima delivers action and style in a big way. Reboot the future with Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series.
