(More customer reviews)I am 82 years old and this series has kept me jumping. The first three season were great, but the boys really hit their stride in the fourth season. The humor in this segment with Drama and Turtle is some of the best I have seen. The sub characters which are inserted from time to time are well cast. Dom and Billy come to mind. Outstanding in his ongoing role is Ari's secretary. I like the way in which Doug Ellin keeps two to three stories going within each segment, but ties them all together. The fast pace is a key element in holding your interest. I feel the best defined parts are Ari, Drama, Vince and Turtle. There is something lacking in E. I like him, but he needs to become less boyish. I hope I don't run out of steam before the series ends. How about another 7 or 8 years. If you guys will hang in I 'll certainly try. RD

Entourage - The Complete First Two Seasons (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Starring Adrien Grenier, Kevin Connally, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, and Jeremy Piven, Entourage Seasons 1 and 2 follow the lives of hot young actor Vince Chase and his posse of friends from the old neighborhood as they maneuver and strut through the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
Season 1 was eight episodes of junk food goodness. We were introduced to Vince, Eric, and the crew, and Vince's agent extraordinaire Ari, as well as a never ending sucession of beautiful women. The boys are styling and living large, the women are drop dead beautiful and available, and the LA night life and movie premieres fill their days and nights. This show packs a visual orgy of celebrity glitz and glamour. The writing is clever and the wit varies between sarcastic and sophomoric, but overall the show entertains everyone, because deep down we all want a little taste of the Hollywood life. Eight episodes of this new and entertaining show wasn't enough to satisfy, but HBO wisely picked up Season 2 for a twelve episode run.
Season 2 kicked off a year of drama and instability for Vince and his crew. After coming back from the making of indie movie Queens Boulevard, Vince discovers that offers are drying up as fast as his bank account. Aquaman, a big budget James Cameron movie, could be the big money payday that both Ari and Vince need, if Ari can get the offer and Vince decides to take it. Eric is torn between his friendship with Vince and his desire to be a real manager, not to mention between his girlfriend Kristen and a Perfect 10 model. Turtle learns that Eric's old job isn't as glam as it seemed, while Drama discovers that calf implants may be the ticket back to stardom. Even Laker games, beach parties at Jamie Pressly's house, and hitting the slopes at Sundance, can't hide the fact that things are getting tense: Ari is making a play to start his own agency that may land him on the street, Eric may lose his job by being a good manager, and Vince gets bowled over by the love of his life and new Aquaman co-star Mandy Moore.
Twenty half-hour episodes in 2 seasons isn't nearly enough, but Entourage is one of those shows that you have to have in your collection. Season 2 showed the possibilities of where the plots can go for a full season, and thankfully HBO decided to expand Entourage to a full 22-episodes for year 3. The box set extras are standard, and the price is a bit high for both sets, but HBO always gives you a bang for the buck. Recommended.

The complete Second Season (3 Discs) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I tried to explain this show to somebody the other day, and the most appropriate description that I could come up with was "Entourage is like the male version of 'Sex & The City', but based in Hollywood and with a more clearly defined plot." So, yeah... that's pretty much it.
If you watch one episode and enjoy it, then you MUST try to watch the whole series in its' entirety. Sure, you could jump in and start watching at any time, but the only way that you'll appreciate the inside jokes and past references is to see it from front to back. The show's writers really get into a great rhythm around the middle of season two.
In my opinion, the REAL stars of this series are Johnny Drama, Turtle, and Ari. Sure, the relationship between Eric (aka 'E') and movie star Vince is the engine that drives the show, but the funniest moments in the show involve the other members of the entourage. 'E' tends to take himself a little too seriously, and his girl problems are rather contrived at times. Vince is certainly the center of attention in his little universe because everything hinges on his career, but he couldn't function without his support group - which is the point of the show, I think.
My favorite facet of the show is how everybody that they interact with on a regular basis are all stereotypical entertainment industry people; from the sycophantic personal assistants and ubiquitous groupies, to the slick and smarmy super-agents and power mad producers. Also, the nature of the show's Hollywood locale results in the inclusion of tons of great Star Cameos.
Entourage was one of the few shows in recent memory that had me laughing out loud and actually giving a crap about what happened to the characters as the story developed. I can't wait to see what goes down in Season Three. If you'd like a solid TV drama/comedy that's got a shot of testosterone, or if you're tired of your girl forcing you to sit through re-runs of 'Sex & The City' and want to make her watch something you BOTH might enjoy for a change, then you should check out Entourage.

(More customer reviews)Fame, fortune, luxury, and letting it all go to your head; agents, managers, publicists, and everyone else that will lie, cheat, or steal to get a piece of you; and remembering your real friends. These are all key ingredients that make "Entourage" thoroughly entertaining, as well as freighting when you think about how it's based on reality.
I take the show as a cautionary tale; the entertainment industry is where I have just barely started to get my feet wet. There is a lot of truth in this fictional show: either everyone wants a piece of you or no one knows your name and can't spare a minute of their time. From my limited time spent dealing with people of the industry, on either coast, I have already found more jerks and egos-out-of-control than I care to recount. "Entourage" does an excellent job of exposing the dangers of the L.A. lifestyle, while simultaneously managing to present them in a thoroughly enjoyable manner.
The superficial world that is the entertainment business is navigated successfully through the four different personalities that make up the entourage. The four personalities of the Rising Star, Has-Been, Bum, and Level-headed Average Guy balance out the cast and provide a character for everyone to enjoy or relate to. Their friendship and their dependence on each other make the characters a success, as well as a success in the world of the show.
Jeremy Piven's role as agent to rising star, Vincent Chase, is thoroughly entertaining as well as aggravating. He's not quite the villain, but the perfect embodiment of the guy you don't want working against you. His quick one-liners and perfect delivery make it a joy to watch the show, whereas a real-life encounter with a guy such as him would probably make you want to deck him.
"Entourage" is rife with inside jokes, but not enough to lose the average viewer. Instead, the average viewer might just see the show as a bunch of losers whining about the good life and living high off the hog without really working. I enjoy it, but it's certainly not for everybody. I see it as another example of why I don't, and never want to, live in Los Angeles.
Show business is unlike any other business: they work by their own rules and decide who to let into their little clique. It's about as safe as sleeping in a pit full of vipers, but our glimpse at what it's like to live on top is good a one.

Entourage: The Complete Fourth Season (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I press "Play." The HBO static kicks in. Yet, the "Superhero" theme by Jane's Addiction is nowhere to be found. Before we begin, ENTOURAGE's 4th season presents a mini-documentary (like THE OFFICE) detailing the trials and tribulations of getting a dream project made. This change of pace promises great things to come; the premiere episode of ENTOURAGE's fourth season will undoubtedly go down as one of its greatest.
As the show continues, it continues its solid streak for a while. Although the remaining 11 episodes are shot in the traditional style we've seen this show use for years, things become even more desparate and challenging for Eric, Vince, and Ari than ever before. Their domestic lives and careers are really put through the ringer this time.
Eric continues to try to expand his career, but struggles to get what he wants most: Respect. Vince actually matures more than the rest of the cast this season. His optimism is no longer a boyish laziness; he actually steps up to plate when the line is drawn in the sand. Ari Gold has plenty of issues on his own. If you thought his financial woes in seasons' past made him a bitter man, wait until you see how his domestic life tests his aggressive masculinity.
You may have noticed I haven't mentioned Turtle or Johnny Drama yet. Well frankly, ENTOURAGE really drops the ball with them this season. While the gang's rapport is still very funny, I'm frustrated that neither of these two characters have shown any growth since the show began in 2004. Seriously, does Turtle really only think about sex, weed, and assorted materials? Gimme a break! Drama's insecurities are becoming pathetic, but at least Kevin Dillon's brilliant performance still sells it. Never once did I think that Drama wouldn't behave the way he does.
I don't want to give away any cameos, but be assured that they all pay off. Remember Scarlett Johannson's pointless bit from the Season One finale? Don't worry, you won't find any of that useless "Hey-Look-It's-Him/Her" garbage.
Special mention also has to go to Rhys Coiro's turn as crazed auteur Billy Walsh. While I can't believe a man like that is inspired by a real person, he's given just the right amount of screentime (and madness) to be effective, but not overstay his welcome. Also, Perrey Reeves and Rex Lee (as Mrs. Ari and Lloyd, respectively) get to kind of "star" in their own individual episode. While neither really contributes anything significant to Season Four's overall story, they were a nice change of pace.
I guess that last sentence summarizes my overall reaction to Season Four. I found these 12 episodes to be very entertaining, and with plenty of neat ideas thrown in to keep things from getting stale. But when I look at the season from beginning to end, the middle patch really doesn't have much to with the bookends. For example, there's a nice small angle involving Anna Faris. While it works the way it plays out, there were so many lateral moves the writers could've done with it. But in the end, very little has changed.
That's the problem with Season Four - Nothing's Really Changed.
The creators had one of their best plots when Ari Gold wasn't in Vince's good graces. That's why that particular season was so excellent. The writers and creators took a chance. But in Season Four, the chances are merely temporary. For four years, I've watched these characters take small steps into uncharted waters, only to return to shore. It's time to shake things up again before ENTOURAGE starts getting stale. That day hasn't come yet, but be assured that this series is still a very slick, entertaining comedy.
