(More customer reviews)I work for the Dinosaur Natural History Association in Brooks, Alberta. We support Dinosaur Provincial Park. Because of this I started receiving phone calls from the UK, from friends and family asking me if I had seen "Walking with Dinosaurs". Everyone was raving about it, however, I had at this time no idea what they were talking about. Luckily I was sent a copy for Christmas and what can I say. This is one of the most fascinating and incredible set of programs I have ever seen. My mouth was open in amazement most of the time! The animation was beyond belief. Basically "Walking with Dinosaurs" is 6 part series made in documentary fashion. The producers worked with palaeontologists and animators to take what we know about dinosaurs, with what we think we know to come up with six incredible programs of a documentary style that would make you believe you were actually walking with dinosaurs. Narrated by Kenneth Branagh in a way that you would expect to see on the Discovery Channel while watching a documentary on a pride of lions. My nine year old daughter watched this too and was totally caught up in it. Never have I watched such an amazing creation. The animation matches that of the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park". The story lines are believable to the point that you get emotionally involved with the Iguanodon herd risking attack, or the Apatasaurus caught up in a forest fire trying to escape. You want the T-Rex to 'get it' after the way she treats her man! To top it off at the end of the series there is a 50 minute "Making of Walking with Dinosaurs" (at least there was on my copy, I hope you all get it on the DVD) Which leaves you with feelings of nothing but admiration for Tim Haines's team, who worked hard at their research and quest for fact, the conditions they had to create in their heads to film landscape with no dinosaurs, from the footprints they had to make in sand to trees swaying and splashing water... WATCH THIS! It is hysterically funny in parts and you will be amazed. If you watch no other movie or series in your life .... watch this one because you will feel totally fulfilled, amazed and be on the phone to your friends telling them about it. It is truly brilliant and you will want to watch it all over again immediately afterwards... I know I did!

Dragon's World: A Fantasy Made Real (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)To produce a scientific study of a creature that never existed, then place it in a format that makes it seem credible, should be considered a sci-fi/fantasy flick, right? Nope, the good folks over at Animal Planet took the time to create an entire biological and environmental make-up for dragons, and then presented it in a format similar to all of those dinosaur documentaries such as "Walking With Dinosaurs."
By doing this, we are asked to believe in the "what if" factor. The documentary, scattered with recreations of T-Rex and dragon fights, mating rituals, hunting, and other day-to-day happenings in a dragon's life, follows the work of a small British scientific team who research a creature found in Romania. There mission is to prove or disprove a hoax.
The team, headed by a very enthusiastic rookie, begins to explain how dragons might have been able to fly, survive the K/T incident, adapt to colder climates and, most importantly, breathe fire. They explain how this precious fire gives them an edge on all of the other animals that inhabited their world until man comes along.
Though some of the science is sketchy and hard to swallow, you have to let your mind go and "pretend" that dragons actually could have roamed the earth. The acting in the flick is pretty good, though the lead scientist seemed to be forcing his emotions. The special effects are wonderful for a documentary. They are right up there with "Walking With Dinosaurs" and easily outperform any flicks put on by the SciFi channel.
Overall, an enjoyable flick that gives hope to those who have always wondered if dragons really existed. Perhaps Animal Planet will do more show like this explaining the science of creatures like Bigfoot, Chupacabra, griffins, etc.
Highly recommended for the whole family. There is just a little bit of violence, and it is all handled very well.

Barbra Streisand - Timeless (Live in Concert) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)This Streisand concert is incredible. Barbra, at 58 years old, sounds incredible. The show, named "TIMELESS", is a walk down memory lane with Barbra. She sings all of her hits plus a few seldom-performed songs.
I feel the need to clarify for buyers out there: This DVD is the same concert that the FOX television showed -- however, FOX edited out every reference to the "Millenium" or "New Years" and basically aired a truncated version of this DVD. Also, this DVD is NOT Barbra's final show in New York. This is a recorded version of the December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000 shows at the MGM Grand in Vegas. Barbra proceeded to perform "Timeless" in Australia, Los Angeles, and New York. The DVD cuts out the song "Simple Pleasures" which was placed in Act II between "The Clicker Blues" and "The Main Event". However, if you watched the FOX special, you will be happy to find a lot more songs on this DVD that were not included in their telecast -- including "Miss Marmelstein"; "A Sleepin Bee"; and the "Auld Lang Syne" songs. Plus, more of Barbra's in-between-songs patter and schtick will be on the DVD (including Shirley MacLaine's video skit and more of Savion Glover's Brother Time...).
As for the concert itself: Compared to 1994-95's "BARBRA: THE CONCERT", you will find "TIMELESS" to be full of more lights, costume changes and theatricality (it opens with a cast of three, and includes Lauren Frost portraying a 14-year-old Barbra). TIMELESS is what I would call the ULTIMATE STREISAND concert. You get a fleeting idea of what it would be like to see Streisand on stage at the Winter Garden Theatre in FUNNY GIRL back in the 60's. Barbra gives a very athletic performance in TIMELESS. She dances, crosses the stage, and flaps those wonderful long arms up and down like a bird (ahhh, vintage Streisand moves!) The 1994 "CONCERT" is serene, yet simpler in comparison.
As for the voice, I have realized that 60-70% of experiencing Barbra as a performer is watching her! The voice, although older and richer, is still amazing. The actress and performer is still exciting and idiosyncratic -- put the audio and the visual together (i.e. the TIMELESS DVD!) and you've got an incredible record of Barbra Streisand's final performances.
I think Barbra will come out and appear "live" and sing a little in the next few years -- benefits or awards shows. But, I do believe that these TIMELESS concerts were the last time that we fans could realistically buy a ticket. Therefore, we have this DVD to remind us what a terrific performer Streisand is.
