The Bonanza Collection (2009) Review

I'm 21 years old and have grown up watching old westerns such as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Laramie, Big Valley and Wagon Train. Out of those five, Bonanza is my second favorite (Gunsmoke is my first). I have a lot of Bonanza DVD's and all of them have episodes the others have. As much as I like Bonanza, I will not buy anymore DVD's unless they are season sets or have different episodes. This set has the same exact episodes that all of the other Bonanza DVD's that have been released in the past have. I don't understand why they keep releasing the same episodes over and over again. All they are doing is changing the covers of the DVD cases.
Now if there is someone who doesn't have these episodes, let me tell you they are great episodes and you wont regret buying them. But if you are like me, who have these episodes on other sets, then don't waste your money.
I give Bonanza five stars and usually I give the DVD's that have been released five stars. This one I am giving three stars because of the fact that these episodes are already out there on numerous Bonanza sets.
They need to start with the seasons sets now and if for what ever reason they can't do season sets, I understand but at least release different episodes that people don't have.

I'm a fan of Bonanza and I like horses, cowboys, cattle, etc.
This is a great TV show but, a little bad transfer on this DVD and this DVD is not terrible except, they removed the original theme music and the video is washed out. I don't care about it.
There are four episodes on one disc:
1. Day of Reckoning
2. The Avenger
3. The Ape
4. Breed of Violence
My favorite episode on Volume 5 is "Breed of Violence."
In this episode "Day of Reckoning":
After Matsou the Indian (Ricardo Montalban) save's Ben's life, Ben gives him a parcel of Ponderosa land. Mastou cuts his hair aand learns to farm. But Matsou's former tribe kills the wife of Ike Daggett (Karl Swenson), Ben's neighbor who hated Indians. Ike Daggett kills Matsou's pregnant wife as revenge, which drives Matsou to torture Ben, who he bames for tansforming him.
Guest Star: Ricardo Montalban
Written by: R. Hamer Norris, Leonard Heideman
Directed by: Richard Bartlett
In this episode The Avenger:
After Ben and Adam are convicted of murder, a young man named Lassiter (Vic Morrow) takes up their cause. Lassiter's parents were lynch victims and he is dermined not to let that happen to others.
Guest Stars: Vic Morrow, Jean Allison
Written by: Clair Huffaker
Directed by: Christian Nyby
In this episode The Ape:
Hoss becomes friends with Arnie Gurnthie (Cal Bolder), a huge retarted man. Arnie loves Shari (Karen Sharpe) the saloon girl, but when she spurns him he accidentally kills her.
Guest Stars: Leonard Nimoy, Cal Bolder
Written by: Gene L. Coon
Directed by: James P. Yarbrough
In this episode Breed of Violence:
Sheriff Kincaid (Val Avery) is strict with his daughter, Joe's friend Dolly (Myrna Fahey). To escape his tryanny she leaves town with Vince Dagen (John Ericson), unaware that he has robbed a bank.
She learns the truth when he and his companions kill a guide while trying to kidnap the Cartwrights.
Guest Stars: John Ericson, Myrna Fahey, Val Avery
Written by: David Lang
Directed by: Johnny Florea
"Breed of Violence" is a very good episode and David Lang is one of the best screenwriters and wrote other two Bonanza episoses. I think David Lang could probably eat white rice with ketchup and toasted bread and butter and we'd call David Lang "The David Lang Bread and Rice Guy" and make of the meals called "DAVID LANG'S SPANISH BREAD ROLL TOAST,WHITE RICE AND CORN ON THE COB" and that'd be the best meal ever to have for lunch or dinner and you should have it sometime if you go to New England. Delicious!
I hope you all love Bonanza!
I loved, liked, enjoyed and I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Platinum's TV Classics edition of the classic western series BONANZA is a true must-have for any fan of this landmark series!! In Volume Three of this edition, originally part of a two-disc DVD set that's on sale at Wal-Mart for $5.88!!,the following episodes include BADGE WITHOUT HONOR (9/24/60),THE BLOOD LINE (12/31/60),THE COURTSHIP (1/7/61),and DEATH AT DAWN (4/30/60).BADGE WITHOUT HONOR involves an escaped killer, who poses as the local sheriff, who searches Jason Blaine,a married man of the bride, who is a friend of the Cartwright family, who comes to take him back while he's the star witness in the murder trial of the Murdock Gang.In THE BLOOD LINE,directed by film and TV veteran Lewis Allen,Ben Cartwright accidentally kills a man in self-defense.But when the victim's son returns home,he wants to kill Ben! Next up,THE COURTSHIP has Hoss falling in love with the new woman in town (Julie Adams of "Creature From The Black Lagoon" fame). And finally,DEATH AT DAWN,the last episode of the first season, sees The Cartwrights and the local Sheriff involved in a murder innocent in which they hunt down the killer until the killer's hit man comes to destroy Virginia City and its people. These are exciting and enjoyable episodes of TV's longest-running western series, second close to GUNSMOKE!!! Platinum did an amazing job remastering both the picture and sound and even though this DVD doesn't contain the original theme music (since these shows are in the public domain and for copyright reasons),they used an orchestral version of "Return To The Ponderosa" as its opening theme which is great to listen to as it opens up the series!!! This is perhaps the best collection of BONANZA episodes out there that are in public domain and it's well worth the price!!! Check out my review for Volume Four of the series!!! Thank you Platinum for preserving this great and classic series on DVD!!!

Once again a great compilation of episodes. Seeing these actors kept bringing back good memories from the past. It has made my collection of westerns even more valuable to me. I have started to encourage some of my friends to purchase their own dvds from Amazon. This is also a good buy.

Simply put: Do not buy this or any other bootleg set that does NOT have the original music but DOES have inferior picture and sound quality. Buy BONANZA: The Official First Season and BONANZA: The Official Second Season vol. 1 released by CBS Paramount; these are the ONLY seasonal sets licensed by Bonanza Ventures and NBC Universal. You'll get all the episodes in this set plus more episodes from the first two seasons, plus great extras including photo galleries, trailers, interviews with creator-producer David Dortort and more. And all the episodes are un-cut, have the original music (including the classic theme song) and look great because they are re-mastered from the original film elements. BONANZA -- the Real Deal -- Rocks! And if you still want official BONANZA for less money -- avoid the bootlegs! -- and get The Best of BONANZA put out by Artisan several years ago. No extras, but the episodes have great picture and sound quality and are complete and uncut.
