Big Love - The Complete First Two Seasons (2006) Review

I love TV series that deliver great entertainment and social commentary in a non-preachy, stereotype busting way, that really make you think and laugh, and sit on edge of your seat, all at the same time. This series is close to the top of my list of such. (Dexter, the HBO series--switched to network CBS in 2008 is another)Dexter.
After reading Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith I inevitably acquired a most negative view of Mormon fundamentalism, especially polygamy. This series made me reconsider my verdicts on Mormonism, and even (never dreamed I'd say this) on polygamy itself. I still believe polygamy is a landmine with the odds against its success pretty high. But the series shows how it has some novel advantages over monogamy, if the husband and wives have love, a sense of humor, and lots of grit and flexibility....and--absolutely a key--if hubby truly loves all wives "THE SAME" (I know, this is Solomonic long shot! Bill pulls it off here though, in quite an endearing way!).
Be ready to chuckle endlessly (e.g. at Bill;s 'heroic' attempt to satisfy all three high-sex-appetite wives, and at Bill's parents' over the top schemes) but also to be serious, thoughtful and root for Bill's kids' realistic and poignant struggles with life in Mormon Utah, and his brother's almost heroic sbility to remain a good man in the nest of a Mormon fundamentalist "prophet" Roman (Bill's wife #2 Nicky's father).
Season 2 manages to cast ALL the characters in an even more morally ambiguous, and yet simultaneously more likable, way than Season 1. Although some scenes are almost slapstick but hilarious, others are totally 3 D, melancholy, and believable. Be prepared to LOVE BIG LOVE!

HBO pushes the boundaries once again with this hit show about a man with three wives. Bill Paxton (ALIENS) stars as Bill Henrickson a Salt Lake City Mormon who appears to have eked out an achingly mundane existence for himself. But scratch beneath the surface and Bill is far from ordinary. Balancing three wives--Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) Nicki (Chloe Sevigny) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin)--who live in adjoining houses Bill also has seven children to raise. He negotiates the strange and stressful setup throughout the show while his best friend Don Embry (Joel McKinnon Miller) often chimes in with some advice from his own life as a polygamist. This release includes every episode from BIG LOVE\'s first and second seasons.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre:TELEVISION/HBO UPC:026359794322 Manufacturer No:97943

Thunderbirds (Widescreen Edition) (2004) Review

At last, the live action THUNDERBRIDS hit the big screen in the UK this weekend, and myself and my wife Sarah were among the first to see it. We were surprised that it was way better than we thought, and indeed, captured the corniness(if that's the right word) and tongue-in-cheek spirit of the TV series which we remember fondly from childhood. Though this film version owes more to SPY KIDS and CODY BANKS with the main Tracey family sons as teens, and there's nothing wrong with that. The story involves evil genius The Hood(BEN KINGSLEY!) taking over Tracey Island - International Rescue and the Thunderbirds' secret island base - in order to hijack the Thunderbird aircraft to rob the world's banks. Unfortunately, astronaut father Jeff Tracey and his elder sons are trapped on Thunderbird 5, the space station that receives distress calls for IR to answer when The Hood fires a missile from his sub(!!). So it is up to younger son Alan Tracey, Tintin and others, including London agent Lady Penelope(Sophia Myles, watch out more for her in the future!) and trusty chauffeur PArker to save the day. The real stars here though are the action and SFX scenes, particularly when The Hood causes a bit of havoc in London by the Thames. Lots of fun for adults and great for the children to enjoy as well; and what a change it makes to see a family movie in which a family pulls together and solves their troubles as a team to get out of sticky situations instead of arguing dysfunctionally as is the case with most so-called family movies. Hey, just forget the negative reviews from certain websites and certain critics and enjoy the movie. A must see.

Big Love: The Complete Second Season (2007) Review

Big Love: The Complete Second Season (2007)

I love this show! I really got a kick out of the first season and the second was even better. The wives are a delightful mixture of devils and angels. The second season is a bit more risque in that the sexual scenes are much more graphic. Definately not for children. As a member of the LDS Church that does not condone polygamy, I was at first interested in the show because I wanted to see how it portrayed the Mormon Church. But it really skirts the issue although there are subtle inuendo like LDS Church icons and landmarks in scenes of the show.
I love the way the wives interact with each other but most of all, love how they gang up on Bill or turn on him to get what they want.
The twists and turns with members of the sect at the compound and the power struggle between the two "prophet" heir families is interesting. Also bringing in another Polygimist sect "the Greens" was a completely new twist which I think we will see much more of in future episodes.
Overall it is a great show and I have my DVR set to watch or record each episode.
Thanks
Kate

The critically acclaimed hit series, Big Love, returns for it’s second break-out season. Bill Henrickson works hard and plays by the rules. All he wants in return is a happy, secure, normal life for his family. Is that too much to ask? Maybe so. For a polygamist like Bill, the American Dream comes with strings attached. Season 2 opens with even more drama, as Bill’s mission to learn who tipped off the authorities and exposed first wife, Barb, as a polygamist escalates. Not surprisingly, his search will lead him to the polygamist compound of Juniper Creek where his primary suspect is Roman Grant. Bill contemplates changes in his personal and professional life that promise to impact every member of his family.
