Hell on Wheels (2005) Review

First, what this film is NOT: it is NOT a documentary of the 2003 Tour-de-France, even though that is where all the action takes place. When the film is over, you won't even know - unless you already knew - that the race was won by Lance Armstrong, nor will you know who finished second and third, or who won most of the stages. The film does not follow the normal storyline of a race documentary.
What, then, DOES it do? It gives an inside look at what it feels like to be a professional cyclist racing in the Tour-de-France, as seen through the eyes of the German Telekom team (now renamed T-Mobile.) Focusing largely on veteran riders Eric Zabel, Rolf Aldag (since retired), and Andreas Kloden, we get behind the scenes to see what life is really like in big-time cycling. And what we see is a world simultaneously more beautiful, graceful, painful, and smelly than what we see on regular television coverage of the Tour.
"Hell on wheels," indeed, for we see the sweat rolling from the riders' faces, the stress, the injuries, the almost military regimen of a virtually all-male world.
We see the rubdowns, the shaving of legs, the plastering of buttocks with anti-rash gel, the injection of (legal) vitamins and supplements, the urination by the side of the road. We see the dirty side of the sport.
But we also see the grace, and we feel the danger. We see the cyclists at speed, and we feel it. Most television coverage of the Tour is taken from vehicles moving at the same speed as the cyclists, so the sense of speed and danger is often lost. This film captures those elements.
And we also see the roadside spectacle, the picnics, the parties, the campers, the police, the traveling Tour caravan, the circus elements of the Tour, which are often noted only in passing in television accounts of the race.
Those who expected this to be an objective re-telling of the 2003 Tour were undoubtedly disappointed. But I disagree with those reviewers who said this film would be unintelligible to those who are not racing fans. On the contrary, I think this would be an excellent introduction to the sport for non-fans. Focusing on the inner nature of the sport, rather than on the results of a particular race, it is an excellent introduction indeed.

This is an emotionally moving story of handicapped people trying to be like "normal" people and live in our world. I found it very beleiveable and touching. I don't know why some people are so up in arms about it. It's about real life! It allows you to put yourself in their shoes and feel what they go through, or feel like in a way.

Donna Selby (Kirstie Alley) and Ricardo Thornton (Delroy Lindo) were two mentally disabled children who were taken from their parents and institutionalized. Donna was angry and afraid; she hated the heavy medications, uncompassionate staff, and had difficulty coping. Then Donna met cheerful and optimistic Ricardo, who had a calming effect on her. Their friendship blossomed over 20 years. Then they were told that the institution was closing. Patients were re-assigned to other institutions, group homes and apartments. Could Donna and Ricardo survive in the outside world? Would they be able to survive without each other? Follow the quest of this mentally disabled couple to find each other again. Feel their love and determination to fulfill their dreams of getting married, having a child, (forbidden by the Social Services Authorities) and becoming a normal family.

After running across Paris Hilton's awful 'book' in the bookstore, and seeing the reviews on this site of this DVD, I actually suffered through this to see if this was for real. Unfortunately, IT IS! These twits must be acting through the whole thing, because nobody could actually be that appalling, could they? But I really do not believe they are acting. This is pathetic! Have these people had no training whatsoever? Are they completely clueless in the etiquette department? This crap is not funny at all! The Leding family must have the patience of a saint, or perhaps, unlike their ungrateful guests, they just did not want to make fools of themselves on national tv. I would have thrown them out in the first 30 minutes! It is absolutely appalling to me how two totally disgusting, dishonest, wretched, lazy and downright stupid people can garner so much attention. This crap is an embarrassment to America! Who are their fans? Rebellious teens? Nothing these two did in this awful escapade was worthy of watching. Stealing, lying, picking on teen girls and taking their boyfriends? Dressing like hookers, acting unbelievably snobbish and stupid, and laughing at their hosts? And why wasn't Nicole Ritchie arrested for her little Clorox incident? People look up to these two because they happen to be born rich? And then some of their 'fans' say that people who look down on them are just jealous. What is there to be jealous of? All of their money combined, multiplied by 100 could never buy the most important things in life that they will never have: intelligence, honesty, compassion, gratefulness, morals, manners....
I can only hope that this stupid 'reality' craze will soon come to a halt, and in ten years, nobody will remember who these morons are. Our culture has sunk to a new low!
