Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan - Volume 1 (2004)

After years of little to no success using traditional "treat" based, reward-centric training, I happened to catch Cesar's show. I implemented some simple steps from several episodes - not greeting my dogs until they had calmed down (rewarding calm behavior, not feeding excitement); asking them to sit before I put down the food dish (establishing myself as more of an authority figure), and walking them in a more disciplined fashion (burning off pent-up energy) - what a difference! This man has an innate understanding of canine psychology and behavior. There is nothing violent about his methods at all - he is, in fact, rather soft-spoken, intuitive and even spiritual, though always practical, using a slightly different approach, often focusing, and voicing, the HUMAN problems behind the unwanted dog behavior. This is where his genius lies. Most of it IS about training the human; the dogs tend to get right in line when we figure things out. One thing I really enjoy about his method is that he doesn't say very much when training a dog (no shouting the dog's name incessantly, as most of us owners are guilty of) - he uses simple body language, gentle leash corrections, and tons of consistency to get results. Toss out those fattening treats and clickers, give this a try. Five paws up!

Out of the entire dvd only ONE of the four "collections" is different than the [...] store exclusive collection. All items on dvd except "The Surprising History of Sex and Love with Terry Jones" is on the Discovery Classics dvd Nature of Sex Collection Science & Nature dvd set on that is only sold on Discovery Channel's store online. What shocks me is that that one interview is what makes this worth buying, you can choose this dvd copy for only $10-$20 and the other one is $50. Same exact stuff excluding the other two items on the other one to which are called "Journey of Life-Human Life" & "From Conception to Birth"

Jack Epson is the heart and soul of his simple small town, which doesn't leave a lot of quality time for his family. One day, he is lured out into the woods at the edge of town and is magically put to sleep...asleep for twenty years! He awakes in a high-tech world where he is a stranger to his wife and his now grown-up-daughter. Now only time will tell if he can rebuild what was lost while he was asleep or if time has indeed run out.
A wonderful film for the family with plenty of laughter and hope mixed with just a little magic!

Chiseen basically means crazy in Cantonese...and these guys surely are. A hilarious mix of skits similar to Punked or Jackass headed up by Daniel Wu and other big Hong Kong actors who were originally from the US. Chiseen had me totally cracking up...my friends and I really enjoyed it. Apparently this show was originally aired on MTV in Asia...which was how I originally heard about it. Good laughs...great as a party backdrop. PS. Do NOT miss Wokboarding or Book of Pain with the Durian...OUCH!!!

Wrestling Society X: The Complete First (And Last) Season (2007)

I've never had the nerve to actually write a review of my own product...WSX is a first! If you are a fan of wrestling then you may already know that I am the Executive Producer/Co-creator of Wrestling Society X. I also own Big Vision Entertainment.
As many of you know, all of us at BVE pride ourselves on our unique wrestling content. The fact theat we were able to get WSX a shot on a major network was one in a million to begin with. And even though i begged the network not to put us up against ECW...we landed right against the ECW main event every week. On top of that, we were on the network during a huge state of flux.
This happens often in the TV industry and there is just nothing you can do about it. One thing I am thankful for is the fact that MTV granted us back the rights to sell the WSX season on DVD. There are so many people who put thier heart and soul into this show. It would take forever to thank all of them...so I will only point out one key player for now. You know him...you love him, Co-Creator Kevin Kleinrock! Kevin lives and breathes wrestling and this show has been his life from the moment it began.
For those of you who already saw the series on MTV, you will be so excited to see all the extras you get in this incredible compilation. Everything from the WSXtra episodes to script breakdowns, special videos and a lot more...not to mention the 10th NEVER BEFORE SEEN final episode! It really is a wonderful product.
In short, I am extremely proud of WSX and feel that dollar for dollar, this is one of the best wrestling DVD compilations of all time. And the price...is dirt cheap! Enjoy...give us your feedback. Thanks for endulging what is a "very rare" self promotion by reading my post.
All the best,
Houston Curtis

Meerkat Manor Season 4 (2008) Review

Meerkat Manor Season 4 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's fitting that Season 4 (considering how Season 3 ended) sort of rebrands itself as "The Next Generation," because it is really both metaphorically and literally a new start--so that means if you haven't seen previous seasons, you can still follow the action and start here, though I would highly recommend the other seasons. Meerkat Manor is, was, and continues to be a one-of-a-kind show.
This season, the narrator is Stockard Channing, and while she is adequate, I prefer Sean Astin's narration (Seasons 1-3). This season is not as quite as heightened (or frankly, powerful--as Seasons 3 and 2) but it is a strong addition to the canon. On one hand, viewers who felt a little...turned off...by how depressing and difficult it sometimes was to watch previous seasons, can find that the mood is lighter here overall (though darker moments abound.) On the other hand, I found the various episodes uneven--some strong, some weaker--as a whole though, it adds up to a good season. There are both new and familiar faces that come to the forefront: Sophie, Rocket Dog, Wilson, and Maybeline being the most interesting and endearing IMO.
At its best, it's still one of my favorite shows on TV (I watch a variety of shows; this is the only "nature/animal" show I watch.) But for various reasons, the level of connection and involvement I felt was not as strong with these new "stars" than the meerkats of past seasons. It should be kept in mind that it took three seasons to fully bring out the full power and arc of the series and "characters" (meerkats) of the past. I feel like this is more of a first act, than the more exciting second or third act (so to speak) of the story of these meerkats, but it's a good place to start fresh and remains a singular "animal" documentary that rivals the best fiction narratives in terms of its depth, character, plot--it's really amazing what extraordinary "humans" these "animals" can be.
One final note for parents: this show is very tastefully done and fairly reserved compared to other nature/animal shows, but nature can be cruel, so you may want to decide for yourself if it is appropriate for your whole family. If you're curious about the ratings, since the dvd is listed as unrated, the majority of the season was rated TV-G, but the last four episodes they changed the rating to TV-PG.
The DVD versions of the television show are the same content as they air on Animal Planet and digital downloads and are good image/audio transfers to DVD (if you are concerned about that) but not having the direct early release copy of this dvd I can't say for sure what extras if any may be part of the set. Traditionally, it is pretty much just the episodes. Though, it would not surprise me if the informative and fascinating special, "The Science of Meerkats" was included as a bonus feature.

In this season of MEERKAT MANOR, the Whiskers are a house divided. Splintered by the bitter rivalry of a powerful pair of sisters, the new families are locked in a struggle for dominance and survival in the Kalahari. Under the leadership of their matriarch Rocket Dog, the Whiskers are still battling against their arch enemies the Commandos and now their own sister Maybelline and her mob of rebellious subjects - the Aztecs. It's an archetypal tale of family feuds and fierce factions, one which threatens to undo them all. Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain - life in the Manor will never be the same.Stills from Meerkat Manor Season 4 (Click for larger image)

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not everyone watches the show when it airs, and if you're one of those people or if you'd just like to know what's on the discs, then this review is for you.
First, let me just say that I absolutely loved the finale. I also believe that the final half of season four was perhaps the strongest of the series (definitely the bleakest). This show had always been a drama with a scifi setting, and while some folks didn't like the fact that it became much more dialogue driven and less focused on action, I loved it. There are ten episodes (finale being a three-parter, but aired as two episodes, so you could say 11 episodes) spread across 3 discs. Here's a breakdown of the EXTRAS on each disc with my opinion of what's useful and what could have been airlocked.
Disc One:
"The Journey Ends: The Arrival" is a look back at the series with the cast and crew. Worth watching.
"What the Frak is Going On With Battlestar Galactica" is a quick 8-minute summary of the show through the first 3 seasons. It's concise and hilarious.
"A Disquiet Follows My Soul Unaired Extended Episode." Better than the broadcast version, and definitely the version I'd recommend.
"Evolution of a Cue" is a behind-the-scenes look at composer Bear McCreary's creation of music for a specific scene (with Roslin). It's incredibly detailed and if you're a fan of the music on BSG, I couldn't recommend this one enough. Actually, even if you're not a fan of the music it's still very interesting.
Disc Two:
"David Eick's Video Blogs" is a collection of 11 3-5 minute video diaries with the cast and crew covering a range of topics. Some are funny and some are just fun to watch. Definitely worth watching.
"Islanded in a Stream of Stars Unaired Extended Episode." Much better than the broadcast version. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode when it originally aired, but this extended version definitely fleshes out the story a lot better and also fills in a few gaps.
Disc Three:
"A Look Back" is another collection of videos(6) with the cast and crew. Not repetitive in the least, this is also well worth watching.
"...And They Have A Plan" is a quick 4-5 minute sneak peek at what the upcoming movie, "The Plan" is all about.
"The Musicians Behind Daybreak." Bear McCreary is again on-hand to discuss what went into creating the epic score for the finale. Even better, we're introduced to the various musicians (and their instruments) who have worked on the score from the very beginning. And once again, this one comes HIGHLY recommended.
"Daybreak Unaired Extended Episode." The finale the way it was meant to be seen. This contains all three parts, and along with extra scenes, it was also re-edited a bit. I highly recommend watching this and forgoing the broadcast version.
Across all discs you'll find deleted scenes (some are very interesting while some are just filler that should have been deleted, and they are presented in SD), audio and podcast commentaries (they're all worth a listen), along with U-Control. U-Control is an interactive feature that offers little facts about the show/characters which you can access as you watch an episode. Frankly, I found it completely useless. I haven't tried the BD-Live content as yet.
It should be noted that you should watch the entire series before watching any of the extras because they do contain massive spoilers.
There is, however, one glaring omission from this box-set: "The Face Of The Enemy" webisodes. While they are available elsewhere online, they should have been included in this set. They answer a question or two (from season 3) and greatly flesh out a certain character's motivations in these final episodes. I'd recommend finding and watching them before watching the episode, "The Oath." While this exclusion is noteworthy, the strength of the rest of the content in this set more than makes up for it. And perhaps we could see them available through BD-Live one day?
Visually, BSG looks gorgeous on Blu. You do notice the intentional grain a bit more at times, but colors pop and lines are well defined (CGI looks better as well). On the audio side, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is simply fantastic. Technically, this set is remarkable.
If you've come along for the ride this far, there's absolutely no reason to not pick up this final half-season to see how this story ends. However, as to be expected, the finale won't please everyone. Whether or not you like it, at least we were given a proper conclusion, which is a rarity in today's television landscape. They told the story they wanted to tell, and left it up to their audience to decide...and that's exactly what I did.
A wonderful conclusion to the best show to ever grace our television screens.

I thought this was a pretty good fantasy epic made on a minimal budget. You can not really compare this to LoTR because LoTR was made on a nine figure budget were KofB may have been made on a couple million, if that. I think it was nicely made on the budget it was given, and it is also nice to see a fantasy adventure in a television world ruled by reality television and CSI clones.

Masters of Horror - John Carpenter - Cigarette Burns (2005) Review

Masters of Horror - John Carpenter - Cigarette Burns (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is actually the very first work from John Carpenter since "The Thing" to scare me at all. I was eleven when "The Thing" blew me away with its gore, violence, and creepy horror, but ever since then it seemed as though his films were getting more and more cheesy. Even "In the Mouth of Madness" which I enjoyed for its Lovecraft-style themes and mood was more surreal than scary. "Cigarette Burns" is both surreal and scary, with dark underlying religious tones. There is the running undercurrent during the story of the fear of the unknown, or the unearthed secret and/or creation that should remain hidden for the sake of all mankind. Themes that are undeniably Lovecraft. I actually did not have a problem with the acting at all, I was simply too enthralled with the mystery and eventual horrifying climax to even notice. The heart of the mystery is incredibly original and thought-provoking, the journey absolutely worth taking. With so many bad horror films coming out these days it is incredibly refreshing to see a true Master of Horror show these young twerps just how it should be done. Even if it is just a short film. Excellent.

Film is magic. And in the right hands, it can be a weapon. For on-the-ropes movie programmer Kirby Sweetman (Norman Reedus of THE BOONDOCK SAINTS and BLADE II), the holy grail of cinema is LE FIN ABSOLUE DU MONDE, a legendary lost movie whose sole showing was rumored to have driven its audience to a homicidal frenzy. But as Kirby gets closer to the truth about the film, he’s sucked into a private hell of grisly hallucinations and brutal acts of violence. Now the only surviving print of the film is within his grasp… and the most horrific screening of all is about to begin. Udo Kier (SUSPIRIA,THE KINGDOM) co-stars in this gore-drenched mind-blower written by Drew McWeeny & Scott Swan, and directed by horror legend John Carpenter, the creator of THE THING,THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK,THEY LIVE and HALLOWEEN.

I continue to be riveted by this show. There is no show on television in America that presents a truer picture of what it means to serve your country in the War on Terror. This season ratchets up the suspense and personal angst of the main characters. There were times as I watched this show that I was literally floored by the actions of these men and women, the lengths they were willing to go in order to do their job as they saw it should be done. Matthew MacFadyen once again turns in a bravura performance and by the end of the season you are actually on the edge of your seat to know what happens. This series continues to be one of the most well-acted and well-written spy shows I have ever seen. Should not be missed by anyone who loves great drama and the spy thriller genre.

Agatha Christie's Marple: Series 2 (2006) Review

Agatha Christie's Marple: Series 2 (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sleeping Murder seems to refer mostly to what was done to the original book. Obviously considering Christie's mysteries too mannerly, the scriptwriters invented a troupe of actors who sleep around with each other, then changed the step-sister in the plot to a real sister so some incest could be added; by the time the heroine breaks off her engagement to her fiance, it is a mild denoument, but at least consistent.
In By the Pricking of My Thumbs, Miss Marple is injected into a plot where she is totally unncessary; and rather than the happy, intelligent couple we know from Christie's books, we are presented with Tommy as a bumbling, insensitive beaurocrat and Tuppence as a depressed boozer (with some unexpected company, since the local clergyman is also an alcoholic, of course).
The Moving Finger is much better in plot alignment, even though it opens showing the hero writhing in bed with various women (thankfully, only one at a time). But here the costume production details were messed up pretty badly: the (very) busty governess is about to explode from the low-cut cocktail dress she is wearing early in the morning as she oversees her young charges (in which any sudden movement would certainly have added graphically to their education); and when the hero's sister is shown seated at a formal dinner party eating with her gloves on, I laughed aloud; who made this episode, 21st century Americans?
All of this is a real shame, since a lot of thought and money obviously went into the period detail, and the acting is top-notch; but the representation of 1950's behavior is so unrealistic that it counteracts all the effort put into the visualization of the small towns and their surroundings. I've added an additional star from my earlier review, since the producers really did apparently try to give us 1952 England; but the production was forced to be so post-modern friendly, that they lost the originality and reality that would have made these episodes much better editions.
Had they considered a series focusing Miss Marple's sophisticated nephew, with new story lines, it might have been fascinating; but trying to hang onto some thin thread of the original plots, while taking all the chracters from 2006 and putting them into period settings, was not a convincing combination.

As seen on the PBS Mystery! series Four all-new, full-length mysteries bring you a Miss Marple like no other. Geraldine McEwan (Vanity Fair, The Magdalene Sisters) returns as the spinster sleuth, as shrewd and sagacious as ever. Breathing new life into Agatha Christie’s novels, these intricately plotted and thoroughly engaging whodunits feature the richly detailed settings, lush cinematography, and imaginative screenplays that won Series 1 overwhelming critical acclaim and an Emmy® nomination. McEwan imbues Miss Marple with a kindly sparkle and sly wit that prove "irresistible," raves TV Guide. "Not your mother’s Miss Marple," says the Associated Press. Sterling supporting casts that include Anthony Andrews, Michael Brandon, James D’Arcy, Geraldine Chaplin, Timothy Dalton, Frances de la Tour, Sophia Myles, Ken Russell, and Greta Scacchi further enrich this 21st century celebration of Agatha Christie’s most beloved heroine.

I'm shocked that most people that reviewed this film didn't like it. The first time I watched this I immediately played it again and possibly again after that. Now I've seen it so many times I've lost count. It's warped, twisted, hilarious, and has lots of T & A. The G-mart commercials had me cackling, Maynard and his huge doner (swoon, well that says it all), and Corey's dance routine had me squealing with glee. If you have a slightly disturbed sense of humor you will love this. However, it will probably offend many which is why I loved it. I scored hella brownie points when I gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas last year. If this sounds like something you would like then buy two copies because you may wear it out. And there are very few flicks I can say that about. Mad props to Steve Grasse!!

Dean Martin was the very definition of the word "cool." Handsome, charming, equally at home in heavy dramas or slapstick comedies, founding member of the Rat Pack, half of the hysterical team of Martin & Lewis, and, above all, crooner extraordinaire, Dean Martin was one of the most-popular and most-imitated singers of the twentieth century. This DVD collection is a fabulous compilation of full-length live performances from the early days of television that lets you hear and see why there was nobody quite like Dino. Here he is singing his biggest hits like That's Amore, Memories Are Made of This, Mambo Italiano and much more! DEAN MARTIN: EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY DEAN MARTIN: MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS DEAN MARTIN: ENCORE DEAN MARTIN: EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY Dean Martin's smooth, seemingly effortless singing style was often imitated but never equaled. "The Colgate Comedy Hour" was the perfect showcase for the madcap antics of Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis in the 1950s, but a highlight of each show was when audiences got the chance to see and hear Dino singing his hits live. In this delightful collection, you too will get to see and hear Dino singing at his best on "The Colgate Comedy Hour" as well as some of his later classics in other rare live performances. Songs include "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On," "King of the Road," "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" and many more. DEAN MARTIN: MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS Whether you know him as Dino or half of the comedy team of Martin & Lewis, nobody could put a song over quite like Dean Martin. Here's Dino in top form with another swingin' selection of songs culled from vintage live TV appearances. Songs include, "Almost Like Being In Love," "Memories Are Made Of This," "When You're Smilin'" and many more. DEAN MARTIN: ENCORE Features Dino at the top of his form singing many of his greatest, most-enduring songs at the height of his popularity. In this fabulous DVD collection, you'll enjoy Dino at the very top of his form, ample proof of his remarkable versatility. Songs include: "That's Amore", "Mambo Italiano," "Pennies From Heaven," and many more. No fan of pop music - or the Rat Pack - should miss out on this great collection!

This was actually supposed to be the pilot episode of a TV show produced for FOX. The show wasn't picked up as a series, but FOX still aired it as a TV movie.
As a TV show, this would have been spectacular. The quality of production, the exceptional performances, the character development, and the many layers of theme and story make merely watching this lone episode a telling experience about the nature of television and creativity today. If nothing else, it makes for a good case study on the problem of TV today, especially in the sci-fi arena, and a telling demonstration of what TV could be like, if TV executives were to risk making their show choices based on quality, rather than on the safety of lowest-common-denominator marketability. By the end of this movie/episode, whether you're generally a sci-fi fan or not, you'll wonder how in the hell a show like "V" got on the air, while this was passed on.
This is a quality, imaginative, original production that really sucks you in. As a stand-alone, the only problem is the untidy ending (as it was written in anticipation of more installments to come). There has been talk among fans and the actors that sufficient interest could still get the series picked up, if not by FOX then perhaps by SyFy, and a web page was even set up by the spouse of one actor to organize a letter-writing campaign to that end. I pray that it's not too late for this to happen. The wasted potential here is criminal.

Nothing is what it seems in this daring, futuristic movie event from legendary Director Peter Berg (Hancock) and Executive Producers Michael Taylor and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica). Twelve extremely talented men and women have been chosen to be part of the Phaeton mission, a 10-year trek to explore a distant planetary system. In order to endure the stress of being confined to their high-tech vessel, the crew passes the time using advanced virtual realitymodules that allow them to take on various identities. But as the ship approaches a critical phase of their journey, a deadly flaw is discovered in the virtual system, forcing them to question if someone onboard might be akiller. Starring Clea DuVall (Carnivále), Joy Bryant (Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins), Sienna Guillory (Eragon), Ritchie Coster (The Dark Knight) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Firewall), it\'s a dazzling trip to unexplored reaches of outer space and the inner imagination that Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune calls a \'complex and intriguing film."

Stargate Atlantis - Rising (Pilot Episode) (2004) Review

Stargate Atlantis - Rising (Pilot Episode) (2004)

First off, you may want to read this, then skip over to the season 1 boxed set, as that contains this episode, and the entire first season. It pretty much makes this one defunct. Aside from that, this is a very thrilling start to the SG-1 spinoff, and they've assembled a very interesting team for the show. It's too bad Robert Patrick didn't stay on as a regular, as I liked his tough as nails military leader attitude, and the clashing between him, Sheppard and Weir.
The story revolves around SG-1's discovery of a new Stargate on Antartica, at the end of Season 7, and then Daniel Jackson uncovers a link to the Stargate at the real Atlantis. This new team, headed by civilian Elizabeth Weir, and militarily by Colonel Sumner (Robert Patrick) are sent in to investigate the new find, knowing that they may never safely return. What they find is the ancient city of Atlantis, buried beneath an ocean on a planet in the Pegasus Galaxy. There, they find there isn't enough power to keep the city's shields from imploding with water, so they send a team led by Sumner to a random Stargate dialed from an Ancient code. It is here they encounter the two main races of beings which they will deal for most of the first season, the Athosians and the Wraith.
The Athosians are a nomadic tribe like people, who are friendly, and the Wraith are their feared enemies, but were not seen for a very long time. The SG team's presence there causes the Wraith to awaken, and the Athosians are forced to relocate to Atlantis, which has now risen from the water to become a spectacular city again.
There is plenty of action and tension throughout the entire pilot, and it gives high expectations for the new series. I was a little skeptical whether or not they could keep the interest up through an entire season, and was rather disappointed with the second episode (not bad, but a simple plot that was rather dull), but overwhelmed again with the 3rd episode, which was one of the best of the first season. I won't get into the rest of the season, as this is only a page for the pilot, but you can check season 1 and I will write a review there soon.
