(More customer reviews)This short HBO film is based on a play by David Hare. It's a somewhat bizzare story of an alcoholic poet (Considine) who comes into contact with a powerful businessman (Pryce) and his wife (Thurman). The story revolves around alcoholism and whether or not it is a disease. As anyone with any acquaintance with this topic knows, this is often a matter of intense debate, and one that every alcoholic struggles with. As the story builds, there is some considerable suspense as the viewer is left guessing the motives of the characters, most notably Pryce. I thought the dialogue between Pryce and Considine was mostly quite excellent, and both turn in masterful performances. On the other hand, this is not Uma Thurman's best work but she is nice to look at so all is forgiven. There are a few excessively melodramatic moments and the ending struck me as a bit anticlimactic, but I personally found the film to be intriguing, and to use a tired cliche; thought-provoking. You see, the topic is something that is very personal to me and it literally made me rethink my position and look at it from a different angle. That being said, the conclusion is open-ended leaving the viewer to make up their own mind, and with something to contemplate. 3.5 stars.

I was looking forward to this set, and was sorely disappointed. Wasted my money - and will donate it to the Friends of the Library book sale....

(More customer reviews)If you're a fan of Dr. Katz and just want to get one DVD, supposedly this is the one to get. But it really isn't the best bits from the show's long-ish run. More accurately, it contains the bits with the comics or celebrities who are most famous now. Certainly not any kind of criterion for determining "best." But if you neeeeeeed your Dr. Katz and can't afford the 3-figure pricetag of the full box set, then I guess this will have to do!

Petticoat Junction (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I loved watching re-runs of this show in the late 70's when I was a kid. I remember the opening theme songs being a big part of what I liked about this show. There were 2 opening theme songs. The 2nd theme song replaced the 1st one when June Lockhart joined the cast. I have one of the other Petticoat Junctions DVD (No theme songs on that one Either) and though it has only 4 episodes verses the 7 on this DVD I like it just a bit better than this one. I guess it is because one of the episodes that is titled "The Beatnik" has Dennis Hopper playing the beatnik and I am a fan of most of his work. This DVD is a good buy especially if you are a big fan of the show. None of the shows are in color as advertised, and the picture quality isn't as clear and bright as it could be. But again, one of my biggest disappointments was the absence of the opening theme song. The theme song is replaced with very boring banjo music. If you like the opening theme songs as much as I do you can give them a listen. I had both of the opening theme songs to Petticoat Junction and thought I would share them with other fans of the show. Her daughter, Rory, (Alexis Bledel)is smart, ambitious, and beautiful. The show basically follows them as Lorelei struggles with her love life and career (running an Inn) and as Rory goes from prestigious high school to ivy league college. She too, struggles with her love life and schoolwork. Dozens of other quirky characters are mixed into this witty show, making it funny, heartwarming, and frankly quite addicting. I highly reccomend Gilmore Girls. But just be prepared for hundreds of clever pop culture references throughout every episode!

She starts by returning to the music she played during World War 2, when she belonged to an all-girl band called The Blonde Bombshells. However, when she runs into Patrick (Ian Holm), the drummer from The Blond Bombshells (OK, they couldn't find a girl drummer), she hits on the idea of bringing the Blonde Bombshells back together. However, that's easier said than done--some are dead, some have left the country, one has lost her sanity, one has found God, and all are scattered. However, Elizabeth is not a woman to give up easily. This is the story of nostalgia, overcoming, the love of music...and so much more! [Color, released in 2000, with a running time of 1 hour, 24 minutes.]
I absolutely loved this movie! It is star-encrusted, and even though I am an American, I kept recognizing just about everyone in it. The story is touching, and yet not maudlin. I loved the music (so very timely again), the acting, and the story. The one warning I will give is that the movie earned its PG-13 rating due to swearing, with the "F" word being used all too often. That said, though, this is a great movie, one that I highly recommend.

The Shield - The Complete Second Season (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)Critics are a lot like infants. They want new toys, and they want them now, because none of the old ones is good enough. The sophomore backlash against The Shield began on schedule with the first published reviews of Season 2: One-dimensional performances, excessive violence, blah blah blah.
If only they had watched more than two episodes. The first two episodes of S2 were distinguished by brilliant writing and acting, but episode 3, Partners, was the best of the season. Partners is proof positive that Chiklis deserves his Emmy nomination (and that co-star Benito Martinez and guest star Carl Weathers should have been nominated as well).
The critics were outraged over Chiklis' repeat Emmy nomination, but, as rogue detective, Vic Mackey, Chiklis is even better this time around, trying to set limits on a life gone out of control. His scenes with guest stars Weathers and Mark Rolston, Cathy Cahlin Ryan (as estranged wife, Corinne), and Walton Goggins (both appealing and scary as Vic's partner, Shane), were masterful.
Even better is Benito Martinez, subtle, volcanic, and fiercely intelligent as the reviled, ambitious City Council candidate Capt. David Aceveda. Martinez is heartbreakingly adept at letting silence speak for him. The look in his eyes, whether he is defying his campaign manager or having a showdown with his new boss, conveys all the moral struggle, passion for justice, and yearning for something better that are The Shield's major themes. Michael Jace also brings a quiet strength and deep, abiding kindness to his role as closeted beat cop, Julien Lowe. These two were the best actors on the show this season, and my only complaint about Season 2 is that they didn't get more screen time. Both bring awsome natural talent and presence to their roles.
Kenneth Johnson's Lem is likeable, as is new Strike Teamer, Brian White (Tavon Garris), and I look forward to seeing more of these watchable actors next season. Jay Karnes is always on the money as Dutch, the squad room scapegoat with daddy issues.
The Shield has always featured outstanding guest performances and S2 is no exception. The astounding Jamie Brown as hooker/informant, Connie; Danny Pino as the relentless drug lord, Armadillo; Weathers as Vic's down-and-out ex-partner, Joe Clark; the terrific Camilla Sanes as Capt. Aceveda's pragmatic, politically savvy wife, Aurora; and Rolston as a P.I. who turns emotional baggage into a contagious disease, are all superb.
The Shield's music supervisor, Evyen Klean, is in top form, too. The S2 soundtrack features brilliant scene-to-song matches, and other, larger networks are taking notice. The transcendent 'Aleluia Melisma', from unsigned artist, Steve Edwards, isn't available commercially. Yet, a few months after it was featured in S2's soundtrack, it showed up on one of the hottest new shows from one of the Big Three networks. S2's final montage -- set to Live's "Overcome" -- is every bit as good as last season's capper, and recalls Miami Vice in its brilliant fusion of music and images.
As usual, The Shield was there first. Ignore the critics and check it out.

(More customer reviews)I have not seen the DVD version but I have seen every episode. This is our favorite British Comedy!!! I enjoy Friends but I never laugh this hard. My husband almost hurt himself laughing at poor neurotic Jeff doing his blindfolded strip tease for his "surprise" birthday party!!! Much wittier than Friends could be. The storylines in each episode are great!!! They are so convoluded with twist and turns. The American/NBC version was absolutely painful for us to watch..we wrote to NBC to complain! PLease don't compare the American version to the original - they are apples and oranges. The original is fantastic and I've ordered mine!! Can't wait til Christmas on this one!

Antorcha Encendida (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Televisa makes it very difficult for me to take them seriously when they release chopped up versions of their best telenovelas in one disappointing DVD box set. I'm not a big fan of most of their contemporary telenovelas (especially their recent ones), but I love their period pieces and costume dramas and La Artorcha Encendida (The Lit Torch -- it has a better ring to it in Spanish) is right up there in quality and romance as Amor Real (Real Love), Corazon Salvaje (Savage Heart), Ramona, Yo Compro Esa Mujer (I Shall Buy that Woman) and Alborada (Break of Dawn) -- the latter of which is currently on the air here in the US. I loved watching this intense love story set against the backdrop of the Mexican war for independence in early nineteenth century starring a younger Leticia Calderon, Ernesto Laguardia and Humberto Zurita (who was brilliant as a villain in his most recent period piece called Los Plateados). I also got to see other heavyweights like Enrique Rocha, Carmen Salinas and Juan Ferrara. The brilliant Christian Bach is also featured in this telenovela, but most of her scenes must have been cut off or something because she scarcely appears in this DVD. The scenes are choppy and uneven, the music score is different from the one I remember when it aired on Univision and, if you can believe it, the ending is cut off. We are left high and dry when it comes to knowing what happens to the villains. All in all, this has got to be the worst DVD box set Televisa has ever released. I give five stars to the actual serialized novel because it is one of the best stories I have seen, but I give one star to the actual DVD. I'll be very wary of picking up DVD sets from the popular Mexican production company next time. I hope they will release unabridged or better edited box sets in the future because I like the idea of owning my favorite telenovelas.

Little Britain - The Complete Third Series (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Let me preface my review by saying that I'm a die-hard fan of "Little Britain." However, I will be as unbiased as possible in my review of this DVD.
I have to admit that I do agree with people's criticism that Season 3 of "LB" was not as funny as the previous 2. I didn't find the new characters they added terribly amusing, and sketches with the old favorites do tend to get a little repetitive. I've seen the episodes on BBC America, but I'm looking forward to hearing the episode commentary and deleted scenes. Having said that, I still think that there's enough laughs, giggles, and smiles in each episode to warrant purchasing this DVD. I'd kind of only recommend it for fans and purists... but please know that Matt Lucas and David Walliams' lesser work is still a million times funnier than a lot of drivel that we get here in the US.
Also, as for extras, that's a real enticement to get this DVD. UK fans were disappointed because they were all previously seen television clips. But they're treats and rarities for us US fans. Matt and David never disappoint when they appear on talk shows and such, so that's guaranteed laughs for you too! All in all, if you're a fan and you're considering getting this for yourself or a friend... I'd say "Computer says yes." :)

Kay Mellor's Fat Friends: Season 1 (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased "Kay Mellor's Fat Friends: season 1" because two of the lead actors, James Corden and Ruth Jones wrote and along with Alison Steadman, starred in "Gavin and Stacey" a series I thoroughly enjoyed. This series offers a good mix of comedy and drama that I am sure will please most viewers. The stories have substance and are well written; the characters have depth and reveal their vulnerability as the narrative unfolds. Each episode stands alone as the slimming club members deal with their hopes, failings and emotions. I highly recommend this series and I am looking forward to series two and three. I hope series four; if and when it is released on DVD will be sold as a single season and not as part of a four season group. I think most of us are sick of dealing with this obvious stunt to increase sales at our expense.

Nite Tales (2008) Review

1. There is something like two movies in one.
2. In the first, there are some thug bank robbers that rob a bank and then drive a car that breaks down while headed back to the city. There they meet some cannibals (but they don't know that) that they plan to rob. They try to get ready to rob them, but the cannibals have a surprise for them.
3. In the second part, there are some college kids sitting around at a party and the "Blood Mary" legend comes up. The students say "Bloody Mary" into a mirror several times and then a clown knocks at their door. The clown is a really weird acting guy, and eventually a cop (who may be an impostor) comes along. One of the college kids has her throat slit and the whole scene becomes a Whodunit. While they are trying to figure it out, progressively more of the students get their throats slit until finally it turns out that it was neither the cop nor the clown but that Bloody Mary really *did* make an appearance and do the dirt.
First comment: Flavor Flav looked like a fool in this movie, and didn't add much of anything to it. It's a good thing that his part was short, or the whole movie might have collapsed.
Additional comments:
1. This movie was great for what it was (a low budget picture). One can really see that the director carefully thought out every scene. And the plot was not quite original, but neither was it hackneyed.
2. This is worth a matinee movie ticket just to see it.
3. Some elements of the movie were a bit unbelievable--- but then, it was a horror movie, so it is likely that those parts had to go with the film to make the whole thing work.
Overall, it was an interesting watch.
