While the plot may seem implausible, I really enjoyed this movie. Since I love all types of movies (documentary, action, comedy, drama, etc.), I saw this movie for what it was...an enjoyable way to spend some time. If you are looking for light-hearted entertainment that doesn't require you to think, then this movie fits the bill. Dermot Mulroney is great as the suave date bought by Debra Messing's character. And Messing shines as the woman who blossoms during her courtship with her date. And for those who think she's too beautiful to need to buy a date, they haven't seen the many beautiful single women of the world. Not all movies are meant to be deep and thought-provoking, some are just meant to make you smile...and this movie delivers.

Heroes - Season One (2006) Review

Heroes - Season One (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What if you discovered that you had a superpower -- great strength, flight, teleportation, or amazing healing? And what if you could use it to save the world?
Superheroes are everywhere in entertainment, from comic books to movies. But few manage to be as intelligent, geeky and well-written as "Heroes," a solid comic-book style TV series that explores the repercussions of several "ordinary" people who discover that they have strange -- and sometimes dangerous -- powers.
It opens with Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) reflecting on the human quest for knowledge -- even knowledge that we shouldn't have -- right before learning that his father has been killed, possibly murdered. Suresh's dad believed that "special" people were cropping up, much like in X-Men.
And we are introduced to the "heroes": stripper Niki (Ali Larter) harbors a secret dark side, cheerleader Claire (Hayden Panettiere) heals from any injury, Japanese Dilbert Hiro (Masi Oka) can bend time and space, Senatorial candidate Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) is able to fly, his brother Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) can copy others' powers, a cop Matt (Greg Grunberg) can read minds, and junkie artist Isaac (Santiago Cabrera) sees the future. There are plenty of others that show up, but these start the ball rolling.
While Claire and Hiro explore the potential of their new powers, Niki and her son try to elude some hired thugs --and end up overwhelmed by her dark side, and framed. And Suresh searches for the answer to his father's death, only to find that his genetics research is involved with the "special people," and that a superpowered serial killer is targeting them.
Even worse, Hiro takes a trip to New York (five weeks in the future), and sees the city destroyed by a massive blast -- as does Isaac, through his paintings. How to stop it? As a future Hiro tells them, "save the cheerleader, save the world." The Heroes begin slowly coming into contact, in a haze of dreams, visions, murder, swords and death -- and to stop the serial killer and save New York, more sacrifices may be made...
Unlike most shows about people with superpowers, "Heroes" isn't really about the action or flashy battles. It's half epic save-the-world-as-a-team story, and half exploration of how real, ordinary people would react if they suddenly found out that they had superpowers, and how this would change -- or NOT change -- their lives.
The storylines are incredibly intricate and complex, since there are a dozen subplots and a lot of time travel, and plenty of hints at future events. The careful painting of all these storylines even further in two episodes, one of which shows the pre-Heroic lies of the characters (and how Syler became a murderous terror), and another that shows what the future will be like if they don't change it. It's not a pretty picture.
These complex storylines are enhanced by lots of suspense and tightly directed action, and the makers always know how to throw in a shocking twist, such as a sword-carrying future Hiro showing up.. But there is also some poignancy, and very dark humor from time to time (Claire waking up in mid-autopsy, or twisting her broken neck around). Not to mention some great, sometimes geeky dialogue ("Where did you learn all this?" "X-men No. 143 when Kitty Pryde time travels!").
The actors are pretty much all good -- Larter gives a great double performance, Zachary Quinto is a wonderfully twisted villain, and Panettiere gives a good performance as a teen whose adolescence has a lot more than hormones in store. Masi Oka is the standout, though -- his Hiro is sweet, endearing, geeky, heroic, sad, kindly, funny and thoroughly lovable. The scene where he arrives in New York is adorable.
The "Heroes" are only starting their journey, and the first season of this geeky hit is a must-see for fans of intelligent sci-fi drama. And I doubt their journey is over...

This is by far the worst editing I have seen. You will enjoy if you suffer from schizophrenia or Attention Deficit Disorder, since no single video clip lasts for more than 1 second. Had this series been produced as a traditional documentary it would have been fascinating, but so much for that idea. I sat through three episodes before I could no longer stand it and turned it off. Thank God it was a rental. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD 1) you will regret it and 2) you will always hear me saying "I told you so!"

Cyber Sunday kicks off the event with a WWE.com exclusive Cyber Sunday Preview match between Shelton Benjamin and his opponent voted in by the WWE fans who is R-Truth.The match was too short but I liked it because it was free unlike the rest of the Pay-Per-View.Any it was an exciting match for the United States Championship.Shelton Benjamin wins and retains the title.I give this match a 7 out of 10.
The first official match was a No Holds Barred match as voted in by WWE fans between Rey Mysterio and Kane. This was a very entertaining match and Rey shows everybody escpecially Kane how he is not dead.Rey wins.7 out of 10.
The second match was for the ECW Championship between the champ Matt Hardy and as voted in by the WWE fans Evan Bourne.A great match no one knew who was going to win but the experience difference took part in the decison.Matt Hardy wins and retains the ECW title.Matt after the match said that anytime Evan wants a rematch he has it.But that wont be happening soon because Evan is out with an injury.Great match.7.8 out of 10.
The third match as voted by the WWE fans Miz and Morrison vs Cryme Tyme.I didn't care for this.Miz and Morrison win.6 out of 10.
The fourth match was between Santino and as voted in by the WWE fans the Honky Tonk Man for the Intercontinental Championship.Stupid match.Honky wins by disqualification.3 out of 10.
The fifth match was between The Undertaker and Big Show in a Last Man Standing match as voted in by the WWE fans.A great match. There were spots where I thought 'Taker was done for but he came back and won.8 out of 10.
The sixth match was Triple H faced off against whoever the WWE fans chose with that man being Jeff Hardy for the WWE Championship.A great match. There were spots where I thought Jeff was going to win but once again he is one step away.Very good match.8 out of 10.
The seventh match and the main event was between Chris Jericho and 'The Animal' Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship with the special referee being Stone Cold Steve Austin as voted in by the WWE fans.It was a fun match to watch with the other referee choices getting involved but Batista was able to beat Jericho even though Jericho hit Batista with the World Title belt.Batista finally wins the World Heavyweight Championship he has tried to win back for almost a year.A stellar main event.8.5 out of 10.
This years Cyber Sunday is by far the best one yet.Every match was decided by the WWE fans whether it was opponents, match types,or special guest referee this event lives up to its expectations.8 out of 10 overall.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a unique ability to blend the nuanced with the obvious, to mix cerebral humor with cheap sight gags and fart jokes. If this appeals to you (watch an episode of "South Park" if you are unsure), and you don't mind having your sacred cows slaughtered and made into taco fillings, this film is a must-see --for repeated viewings.
Mad dictator Kim Jong Il plans to subvert Hollywood and become the megaproliferant of the stars. Who can stop him? Only Team America, a gang of ultra-right wing marionettes who think Rush Limbaugh is suspiciously liberal. But don't fret, conservatives: Hollywood pinkos and Michael Moore take a beating, too. Nothing is sacred to Parker and Stone.
Puppets were a mad choice for a medium, but they are done hysterically. I don't know what had me laughing more, the whiskey glass soldered to the team leader's hand, or the thought of the splinters and friction fire from marionette sex!
The sound track alone makes this film worth it. "Freedom isn't Free" could have been a real country hit and Kim singing "I'm so ronery" had my wife blowing her cola out her nose in the theater!
If you are straight-laced, have a poor sense of humor and can't admit it, or can't laugh at yourself, this may not be you're film. If you've got a slightly warped sense of humor, you'll love this!

"Archangel" is a treat for fans of mystery, international intrigue, and the spy genre. Shot in the dead of winter in Russia the film is visually stunning and eye opening to the beauty of the country. Before you watch the film make a big mug of hot chocolate and jump into your "Snuggy" and hunker down in your favorite chair, for I assure you the Russian winter transcends the television screen and will envelop you as you watch the movie.
The story is a complex and dangerous tale involving a race to find the illegitimate son of Stalin. It is a wild idea that somehow seems almost possible and certainly is filled with exciting possibilities as the story unfolds. All involved in this film do their very best to make it work and in the end they succeed.
Daniel Craig is just wonderful in his role as the Dr. Kelso, a bookish expert on Stalin and communist Russia who is drawn into an adventure of a lifetime during a conference in Moscow. Released just a year before "Casino Royale" Mr. Craig shows his range in this early foray into Bond like territory. His performance is as solid to the bone as it is captivating and even at times, moving. He carries the film with ease, and draws another memorable character in his impressive list of credits. .
The only disappointment for me was that "Archangel" being made for British television is not presented in widescreen. If you are a fan of Daniel Craig's you are in for a treat, if you are a fan of adventure, action, and mystery this is a must for your DVD collection

I remember falling in love with this film when it first aired on TV several years ago. I taped it then, and wore out my tape watching it. I was thrilled to see it on DVD, so I bought it.I hadn't seen it in years, but it was as good as I remembered it.
Delane Matthews and Mel Harris each give wonderful performances, as does Ian Ziering. This movie is just fun to watch!
Shelley Long is amazing though! This movie made me remember why I used to love her so much. She is hilarious! Her character is such fun to watch.
I highly reccomend this movie to people looking for some laughs. Especially if you have some fond memories of Shelley Long.

Prison Break: The Final Break (2009) Review

Prison Break: The Final Break (2009)
Average Reviews:

The previously not shown two hours of the TV show Prison Break were packaged as this film. It's a final hurray for the 4-season long show that started out strong and ran into "creative difficulties" at the end. These two hours fill in a few gaps that the series finale glanced over. This is definitely a movie for the die-hard fans, as there are character reveals and returning characters as well as the regulars acting in a predictable manner. This is not a stand-alone film. Anyone who has not been a fan of the show, even anyone who has skipped most of season 4, will not really understand what is going on in the storyline and why the leads are worth rooting for. My recommendation is to watch the series finale up to the "Four Years Later" sequence, then seeing Prison Break: The Final Break, then returning to the season finale and watching the last few minutes (the montage at the end). The storyline is thus complete and makes more sense as well as provides more canon and insight into the lives and storyline of each characters.

"My father hugged my mother and told her, 'you don't need to be afraid ever again. We're in America now.'"
That was one of the MANY personal narratives included in this FANTASTIC documentary that brought tears to my eyes. The stories of how immigrants reacted when they first came to this country and saw "Lady Liberty" is very well told and will leave you with a new appreciation of the great blessing of being born in this free and prosperous land.
I've watched this four-volume documentary two times and will probably watch it a third time. The stories are all so inspiring and so amazing and so emotional! Prior to viewing this, I did not have an understanding of what price our grandparents and great grandparents paid to get to this country.
I can't recommend this video highly enough. My daughter watched it in school and she loved it, too.
Of all the documentaries I've watched, I'd give this a 5 stars PLUS. I'd say it's one of the best I've ever seen. It will leave you changed. I can't even look at a flag now, without thinking about those precious, faith-filled immigrants and getting a tear in my eye. "Ellis Island" is *that* kind of video.

I was introduced to this dvd courtesy of Youtube and a 2-minute clip of Arie Spears. I immediately placed my order for a copy of this comedy show and can't say enough about it. Cedric the Entertainer is brilliant .... Arie Spears is a star who needs to continue to rise because his combination of comedy/improv/impersonation is 100% on point .... and DeRay Davis is a force to be wreckoned with in the comedy world. I was surprised that Tommy Davidson wasn't as funny as he has been in his previous standup concerts...but he warmed up the crowd. Kevin Hart is hysterical. This dvd is well worth every penny (and then some); it's something that for me will never get old!

At the end of the third season of FX's the Shield, crooked cop Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) and his strike team split up. As the fourth season opens, the Farmington precinct meets their new captain in Monica Rawling (Glenn Close), and it's not long before she makes herself noticed. With Aceveda (Benito Martinez) on his way to political office, Rawling makes her presence felt re-organizing the force with Vic as her right hand man, and they both put their sights on charismatic drug dealer Antwan Mitchell (Anthony Anderson). In the meantime, Vic's ex-partner Shane (Walt Goggins) works vice, and gets in way too deep with Mitchell, which leads to the reformation of the strike team in an effort to save Shane, and themselves, before it's too late. Sub-plots throughout the season include Aceveda discovering a dark side he never knew he had, Julian (Michael Jace) looking to be transfered as he opposes Rawling's approach to the seizures, and Dutch (Jay Karnes) finding romance with Vic's ex-wife (Cathy Cahlin Ryan) while trying to get both his partner (CCH Pounder) and himself out of the doghouse with the DA. Many agree that the third season was a step down compared to the landmark first two, and the fourth season delivers firing on all cylinders. Glenn Close is perfect casting as the no-nonsense new captain, while Michael Chiklis is excellent as always as crooked cop Mackey, who this season, appears to be searching for redemption. The Shield is back on track, and it's once again the best original drama on cable TV. By the end of the season, there is a big change for all the main players, and it will leave you salivating for what's coming next.

Yes, there are inaccuracies, as others have pointed out here. This is a dramatization and this is elegant popular entertainment. As an armchair historian, in love with the stories of Henry VIII, I find it absolutely gripping. The acting is for the most part marvelous, and the idea of doing these great personages as compellingly attractive people is a brilliant one. I think there is plenty enough here to draw a person into good books about Henry and the English Reformation. One thing I do like very much is that Anne Boleyn is being presented as the complex woman she obviously was; and Catherine of Aragon has been presented with immense dignity and respect. But the reason I've signed on here to recommend this series is that I really think it will encourage serious study on the part of many as to what really went on when Henry broke with the Catholic Church, and when popular entertainment invites us to study, to learn more, as well as giving us delight, well, that is worth something. The portrait of Thomas More is excellent, and the actor playing Anne Boleyn's father is quite remarkable. Finally, let me confess: there is something delicious about this series, something thrilling. I find myself charmed by it. Of course I wish the Catholic Church was presented with considerablly more understanding on the part of the writers. But in spite of that I continue to watch the second season, as enthralled as I was by the first. And I've ordered a whole slew of new books on Henry just because of this series, so I'm proof myself of what I'm suggesting here: this will encourage the serious study of history. --- The art direction and the costumes are gorgeous. The lighting is breathtaking. --- The sets are glorious. I hope Showtime gives us more of this top notch entertainment.

The Tudors presents the rarely dramatized, tumultuous early years of King Henry VIII’s nearly 40 year, omnipotent reign (1509-1547). In addition to his famous female consorts and 20+ year marriage to Catherine of Aragon to the infamous dalliance with Anne Boleyn, the series delves in to Henry’s most notable political relationship and the deconstruction of the Roman Catholic Church in England.

I used to watch this, just because it was on before Jack of all Trades. I kind of got to "like" it, I guess, it had hot women running around in hot outfits. The stories were about these three girls who live underground in the far away future; the surface of the planet is ruled by evil robots, and androids are lurking underground. So these girls are always fighting against the bad guys. The stories are more or less silly, the special effects aren't all that great BUT I have to give these folks points for originality. They had some pretty cool gadgets, like a computer you wore on your wrist that could project a 3-D holographic image of various things.
All in all, it was cheesy, silly, had a lot of action, and I guess I mentioned all the hot babes. Okay, the only reason anyone would watch this is for the babes, but, that certainly sets it above all the equally stupid whows without hot babes, so there you go.

This is the truest movie out there on racism, and the preconceived notions we ALL (no matter what color) try not to admit to to a certain extent. This was not a "lets bash the white man" movie either, the racism was across the board. The biggest surprise was to come about an hour in, and I was stunned to see the revelation of that storyline (with Matt Dillon). Coupling - The Complete First Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

When they get around to posting an editorial review here, inevitably the comparisons between Coupling and Friends will fly. Don't pay attention. Yes there are superficial similarities -- 6 attractive singles evenly divided between men and women, etc. -- but this is comedy in the great British tradition of farce and has much more in common with Fawlty Towers or Blackadder than with any American sitcom. I'll admit that the incessant need to label the unlabelable (word?) owes a debt to Seinfeld, though.
Episodes included on this first season set are:
"Flushed" -- Steve (the beset Jack Davenport) tries, mostly unsuccessfully, to break up with Jane (the mad Gina Bellman), while beginning a relationship with Susan (the radiant Sarah Alexander).
"Size Matters" -- Steve and Susan's relationship reaches a new level. Sally (the moisturized Kate Isitt) is horrified by Patrick's (the swaggering Ben Miles) political beliefs.
"Sex, Death and Nudity" -- Everyone ends up at Jane's aunt's funeral. Jeff (the crazed Richard Coyle) has his job interview strategy boomerang on him.
"Inferno" -- Susan discovers Steve's video collection. A dinner party goes awry.
"The Girl with Two Breasts" -- Jeff tries to connect with a girl who doesn't speak English.
"The Cupboard of Patrick's Love" -- Susan discovers that her ex (Patrick) has videotape of her in a compromised position.
There is a second season of nine episodes currently in rotation on BBCAmerica for you digital cable subscribers. And a third season has just begun airing in England.
Also, word is that an Americanized version of this show is being groomed as a replacement for ... aw, you guessed it. The soon-to-end Friends. See where it all began here.
And see where it (probably) was a whole lot funnier. Unfair pre-judgment. But probably true.

Frankie & Hazel (2000) Review

Frankie and Hazel (2000)

I review a lot of movies. Most of them tend to be humdrum. Every once in a rare while you find one with a simple plot, predictable happy ending that makes you feel good inside. Even though you have a pretty good idea of how it will end, we never cease to be amazed by the impact that some movies may have on us. This one presents a strong, loving human side of our nature that rarely surfaces. Kids come pretty close to presenting this higher side of ourselves. Even though this movie is simple. It is one of those movies that that will always make you "feel good" inside, and enjoy watching many times over with family and friends. This one is being added to my permanent collection !! Bob :-)
