(More customer reviews)I'm so fed up with broadcast corporations cancelling shows that have even the slightest hint of cerebral value. FOX tops my list of stations that have an almost A.D.D. style of shoot and cancel -- they did the same thing to WONDERFALLS, another fine series that made you think.
MIRACLES was off to an excellent start: put a young man in the priesthood on a special Catholic task force who's sole purpose is to seek out reported miracles in the world, then report back to a cardinal as to if they were real, fake, or unknown. Paul Callan (Skeet Ulrich, Scream) is this one-man force who has science, religion, and a wobbling faith all tied up inside himself. MIRACLES starts out showing us this dark man visiting a cemetery being moved. When they dig up the coffins, a nun who was buried there falls out of the bottom of her casket. And she's in perfect condition, even though she's been dead for 160 years. Come to find out, the graveyard is sitting next to an apricot orchard, and apricots have a preservative effect. Paul realizes this immediately and kicks open a few other coffins to prove it -- inside those are perfectly preserved corpses, too. Thus we get to see that Paul isn't looking for miracles, but is simply trying to give credence to the unexplained.
Also in the first episode, we get to see Paul nearly killed in a train versus automobile crash. While lying in the crumpled car, he sees his blood on the windshield; and it forms a sentence (this is called Hemography) that reads "God is now here." And then a young boy (whom he'd been investigating because of claims that the boy healed with a touch of his hands, but then became ill after each "healing") comes to him and heals Paul ...then the boy dies. When Paul reports back to the cardinal about what he'd experienced, the cardinal dismisses his claim, so Paul up and quits the church. But in the wings is waiting a man who runs a special paranormal research agency. Alva Keel (Angus Macfadyen, Braveheart) becomes Paul's new boss, and the discoveries they make are terribly disturbing.
Apparently, most people who've seen the message that Paul saw in his blood didn't see "God is now here." They saw "God is nowhere." And so begins their spiritual, paranormal, and dark journey.
The thing that bugged me most about this series was its title, MIRACLES. I didn't see most of what they found to be miraculous as much as disturbingly dangerous. But even so, the series held together pretty well regardless of its name.
Paul has to try and overcome the fact that he was saved by a child who gave up his life for Paul's. This horrible event haunts Paul throughout the series as we repeatedly witness his visions and dreams of the boy, eyes bleeding, face gaunt, hair falling out.
It is worth noting, too, that this series has very little in the way of spiritual upliftingness. There are touches of it, but mostly the episodes hit on something dark coming, something terrible. The apocalypse maybe?
The viewer is never given any insight into what exactly is in store for Paul and his paranormal investigations. And, unfortunately, we'll never really know for sure since the show was cancelled (can I bare my b&tt so that FOX executives can kiss it!)
But I do have a theory of my own. Paul was an orphan and never knew his mother or father, and this plays a vital part of Paul's character and how we view him. He's a loner, but a good person at heart. He's just suffering over what to do with his questioning faith in ...everything. But everyone in the series wants to be near him and trusts him. He also goes through Hell on Earth; during his investigations he almost always gets the cr@p beat out of him, only to recover and move on to the next case. I think he was being set up for something large and important; perhaps to become an angel or a type of disciple for the next coming.
But, again, who knows. FOX's idiocy has ruined another great character show. Morons!
I didn't give the show 5 stars because some of the episodes were pretty pedestrian in nature and easy to figure out, but the acting, excellent filming, and haunting music all made this a very watchable series.

(More customer reviews)The Messenger's don't have much as far as material things, but the love they have for each other outweighs anything money can buy. And it's that love that gets them through when they are faced with trials.
It's the 1950's, and the store owner in a southern town gladly extends credit to George & Kitty Messenger (played by Gerald McRaney and Tyne Daly), who promise to pay when the crops come in. Unbeknownst to them, their son-in-law raises their bill and the store owner expects payment by the end of the week. Sheriff Ashford sees this as an opportunity to abuse his authority and get the Messengers - Yankee trash, as he calls them - out of his so-called "fine" town of Jackson. He comes up with a bogus charge, and the Messengers lives become a living hell. George and Kitty spend time in jail and some of their children are sent to a foster home, where old man Virgil is a pervert who sets his sights on their feisty teenage daughter (played by Alicia Silverstone).
The sheriff is played by Sonny Shroyer. I remember him from Dukes of Hazard; he played Enos and he was likable. With this role he sure has proved that he can play someone who is rude, prejudice, unfeeling and downright evil; a very unlikable character.
I have liked watching Gerald McRaney's work ever since Simon & Simon, and I have been an admirer of Tyne Daly ever since Cagney & Lacy. If she has ever played a role where she isn't a strong woman who isn't afraid to face her problems head on, I haven't seen it.
My people perish for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) is what comes to mind when I watch this movie. The Messengers were convicted of a crime that didn't exist, because they didn't know that - as the lawyer who pleads their case to a judge puts it - nobody in this country can be jailed for debt. But in the end Kitty gains the knowledge and courage she needs to lead her family back to heaven on earth.
Although there are parts that irritate me, I like Scattered Dreams. The first time I saw it was some years ago on television. When I came across the DVD here on Amazon, I purchased it immediately. And the speech Kitty (Tyne Daly) gives in the courtroom at the end - so touching, so true.

(More customer reviews)This series starts off a little typical and a little slow (as in not good at getting you really involved) but that soon changes. I'm now a prisoner of this series until I get to finish watching it. I am so sucked in. I'm sucked in as much as usually only the Korean shows can make me.
Condor Hero is a perfect blend of love story and kicka** wuxia. Wow. It's perfect to watch with your guy/gal--both will be pleased.
The subtitles aren't so bad as others have mentioned here. They're fine. The picture quality is great. (I never saw fire look so good.)
Only problems I have with the show is the repeated insertion of music from the movies "Aliens" and "Terminator 2". Umm, they don't think we're gonna recognize it? Anyway, it's distracting.
There are a lot of CG beasties in this show too, which is pretty cool except for a fake-lookin' leopard(cougar?) and these crocodiles that have the ability to pounce 12 feet out of the water and then look rubbery. Ha! But don't let that stop you. The giant CG condor looks great!
There's lots of action, romance, characters, plot twists, surprises (one episode had so many I--I couldn't take it!)
It's just a damn good show. And the leading lady is a hottie.
P.S. Be careful with some of these other reviews -- spoilers in there.

Based on the critically-acclaimed film of the same name, SOUL FOOD reunites the Joseph family in an hour-long drama series, which chronicles the lives of a tight-knit African American family living in Chicago. The series explores, in an honest and touching way, the relationship between three sisters, the men in their lives and their children. The Joseph family faces everyday struggles to which all families can relate. SOUL FOOD is not your typical family it is simply the drama of a family.
(More customer reviews)I'm sorry, I plead addiction, but I have loved this series from its first episode. And I still remain true to it. The writing is excellent, the characters are believable and you can really connect with them. But the best part is the mystery of the whole thing. All the questions that bubble to the surface of your mind when you're watching the show. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, hungering for more. It is a show that really makes you think, and I love that. Some people didn't like this particular season as much as the first two because they didn't understand that the show is still climbling toward the climax. Things aren't picture perfect, but they ARE interesting. My only complaint is that it is too short, here is the list of episodes....

2. The New World, Part 2

6. Graduation Day
7. The Home Front
9. The Ballad of Kevin and Tess

As a teenager a couple of years ago, this show opened a door to my imagination, wanting "Pokémon" to be real so I could travel the world on foot with my friends or family. It's a very interesting story with easy names to remember, it's all about believing in yourself, following your dreams and caring for others. I first got into Pokémon with the fad was dying off, because I did not want to be caught up in all that madness. My sister who is one year younger than me was into Pokémon, when it first came out in America and she eventually got me into Japanese Animation like this one and other basic shows like "Sailor Moon" and the "Tenchi Muyo" series. This Pokémon boxest is only in English, there are no subtitles on any of the disc, however the show is Closed Captioned by using your television remote, also there are no special features and the banned episodes that didn't appear on American T.V., are not on here too. Besides having no special features or the banned episodes, it's still a great boxset of the first half of season one.
P.S. - The "Pokérap" is hear, it's just not include as a special feature.

This season featured many interesting and unpredictable plot twists: an earthquake; nude sunbathing; shocking tribal council outcomes; and, of course, the winner. The DVDs' features are great. The four featurettes, along with the audio commentaries, add much insight and intrigue into what happened behind the scenes. Overall this was an excellent season of Survivor, and this DVD set is a must-have for any true Survivor fan.

(More customer reviews)1814 - the war is over, and Sharpe, like many other unemployed soldiers, goes back to England to seek work. He is assigned to Yorkshire, where he was born, as head of local yeomen serving a corrupt cotton mill baron that oppresses the workers. As Sharpe discovers things are not as black and white as they seem, which side will he choose? The people he left 20 years ago, or the establishment that's fed him for all those years?
This is an original story, not based on any of the novels, but it's interesting for a couple of reasons. One is that it firmly establishes that the TV Sharpe at least is born in Yorkshire - a given, because of Sean Bean's accent, but in the books he was supposed to be a Londoner. Another, more historical reason, is that it deals with the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars in England, which Cornwell never did get around to doing. It is true that the countryside was filled with many now jobless soldiers, and also true that the Industrial Revolution was starting to make its presence felt. While the labour movement may not have started this early, it's still an interesting look at the times. But is it Sharpe?
As much as I'm not fond of Sharpe's previous return to England (see my review of "Sharpe's Regiment"), I find myself liking this one, just to see Sharpe's backstory being developed. We find out more about how he grew up, his regret at not knowing who his mother was, and how uncomfortable Sharpe is with the war hero image that he's earned. As an added bonus, we get to see the incredibly beautiful and sexy Caroline Langrishe back as Lady Anne Camoyne, whose skills at political intrigue pull Sharpe out of the fire yet again. I'll even forgive them for adding the estranged Jane Sharpe to the mix, as the little minx actually shows a little fire of her own (the last scene with Sharpe here is particularly harsh).
If the series had ended here it would have been a fine coda (albeit with a few loose ends). But we know it doesn't, not when there's the biggest of battles to fight. So it becomes just a little filler in between "Revenge" and that little contretemps at Waterloo...

Sharpe is back in England with his reputation fully restored. He is ordered to the north where he is to command the local militia in a troubled town. It is here that Sharpe faces an agonizing decision - whether to side with the town's corrupt gentry or to support his own kind, the rough and tough of the world who are abused by their superiors.

The bonus features are as follows:Commentaries --- For several episodes, featuring both crew and cast. These commentaries are insightful and entertaining and will definitely help you to understand certain aspects of the show better. It's too bad they couldn't do commentary for "Death Takes a Holiday" and "Twice Upon a Time," but I suspect they were still wrapping work on those eps while this DVD set was being created.

"Medium" in Another Dimension --- Discusses the 3-D episode of the show, "Still Life." This is pretty interesting and has some insightful thoughts, but a lot of it is already covered in the commentary for that episode.
A Day in the Life of the Dubois Daughters --- Discusses the actresses that play the daughters of the show, as well as the characters themselves. Includes their school studies, how they prepare for the show and anecdotes and praise from other cast and crew.

From Emmy Award-winning executive producer, creator and director Glenn Gordon Caron ("Moonlighting") comes "Medium," a chilling drama series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois. Emmy winner Patricia Arquette ("Stigmata," "Flirting with Disaster") stars as a young wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people. Arquette received the Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category after the telecast of the initial 16 episodes of the critically acclaimed series. Allison DuBois (Arquette) is a strong-willed young mother of three, a devoted wife and law student who begins to suspect that she can talk to dead people, see the future in her dreams and read people's thoughts. Fearing for her mental health, she turns for support to her husband Joe (Jake Weber, "U-571"), an aerospace engineer, who slowly comes to believe that what his wife is telling him just might be true. The real challenge is convincing her boss, D.A. Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) -- and the other doubters in the criminal justice system -- that her psychic abilities can give them the upper hand when it comes to solving violent and horrifying crimes whose mysteries often reside with those who live beyond the grave.
