I was lucky enough to catch Numb3rs from the beginning. I absolutely love the show. First, it is different than your standard cop show, and even different from all the CSI type shows. The show has strong characters and you really feel like you know them. The FBI is portrayed as actually being human rather than a federal conglomerate. The tie in with the math is simply awesome. I am not a huge math guy, but it is interesting for me, and the show does a good job of explaining the math via great scenes. I give this 5 stars.

FBI Special Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) recruits his mathematical genius brother Charlie (David Krumholtz) to help the Bureau solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. The two brothers take on the most confounding criminal cases from a very distinctive perspective. Dr. Larry Fleinhardt (Peter MacNicol) is Charlie's friend and colleague who urges Charlie to focus more on his university studies than on FBI business. Don and Charlie's father, Alan Eppes (Judd Hirsch), is pleased to see his two sons working together, but fears their competitive nature will lead to trouble.

The Cosby Show: Season 8 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
By 1991 The Cosby Show was not exactly the commercial powerhouse it had been in the mid to late 80's but remained the hottest game in town. As with many a last season this series ties up many loose ends. There are five main plot points the generally extend throughout the seasons, sort of as mini story arcs: Cousin Pam trying to apply to collage and coping with Charmaine going away to collage,Cliff trying to build a private room for Clair now that most of the kids are away,Theo preparing for his upcoming graduation, somewhat of a teenage "love traigle" between Rudy,Kenny and their respective loves interests and new collage student Vanessa's truly bizzare relationship with the older but self sufficiant Dabnis, whom Cliff takes a shining to because of his abilities as a tinker. There are some funny moments this season but for the most part the episodes concentrate on developing and closing the story arcs and thus the characters themselves. Another important part of this season is that this is the very first season of The Cosby Show where Lisa Bonet doesn't make even a single physical appearance in the show;Dennise is only refered to casually in select episodes and is only spoken to over the phone (we don't hear her voice) in the finale. That finale is the 44 minute "And So We Commence",involving Theo's collage graduation and Olivia departing to join Dennise and Martin in Singapore (as well as finding out she's becomming a big sister). So this is a pretty good season but the wacky humor and individually great episodes are sacrificed in favor to tieing up the loose ends for the shows enevitable conclusion. It was kind of a sad day when the Huxtables left the airwaves in 1992;I personally believe prime time family comedy just hasn't been the same since then.

Tracy's Animated Crew, September 3, 2006
Reviewer: Bennet Pomerantz "Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD" (Seabrook, Maryland) - See all my reviews
Chet Gould's classic comic strip Dick Tracy got a make over in the 1961 animated cartoon series.
Dick Tracy was the point man of this cartoon series. He assigned cases to his junior detective/comic sidekicks Joe Jitsu (a karate Charlie Chan wannabe) and Go-go Gomez (a speedy quick Mexican detective). Both sidekicksa are voiced by Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny). These junior detectives combat cases with classic rogues' gallery of Tracy's villains like Flattop, Itchy, Mumbles, Prune face, etc.
These so-called sidekicks were so much stereotypes. However this was theideal of most 1960's animation and cartoons. The aninmated stereotypes were normal for TV at that time
The animation is good and crisply done for 1960 TV animation, unlike the 1960's Marvel moving pictures or filmation stuff with DC heroes (with Superman, Batman ,etc). It is fair in animated standards, not just lips moving like Clutch Cargo. It was UPI Studios who also did Mr Magoo cartoons, so there was a sense of quality to it. In my opinion, It fared better than most of today's stuff tv animation has to offer other than Hanna Barbara animation , which to me was and is the gold standard of cartoon excellence. I think Ed, Edd and Eddie for an example of the worse of today's animated stuff. This DVD has no extra features, just good clean family fun. It is worth getting for a keepsake of great 1960's animation.
However if you want good animated TV Tracy adventures, I am holding out and waiting for TV Funnies with eight minute Tracy Episodes (which are unavailable for DVD at this time). Until then, this will have to do for my TRACY fix.
Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD

Hee Haw is back Yeah. I grew up watching Hee Haw before I really liked country music. I watched it for the great actors on the show and the comedy. I really learned to love country music from watching Hee Haw. The salute to Hee Haw is awesome. The have some of the best moments from the early years on Hee Haw. Hee Haw was on CBS for a few years, until CBS decided to cancel all of it's shows with "trees" in them. They canned Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and the Beverly Hillbillies. Hee Haw went into syndication and thrived lasting over 20 years. Check out the interviews on the last disc. There are wonderful interviews with Roy Clark, Ronnie Stoneman, Lulu Roman, Hager twins, and George Lindsay. Watching these DVD's makes m want to order more in the Hee Haw series. I wish there was something like Hee Haw on TV today.

Films like Anacondas 2: Hunt for the Blood Orchid are why we go to the movies. To escape. To forget our problems. Anacondas does not disappoint. I was enthralled from the moment I pushed play on my DVD player.
The filmography is impressive. There are great panoramic shots of jungles and nice shots of the full moon that gave me chills. The score of native music lends to the mood of being lost in the jungle with a maniac and giant anacondas.
The story is about a group who goes to Borneo to seek rare specimens of the Blood Orchid. These researchers believe the Blood Orchid has chemical properties that can extend a cell's lifespan, thus prolonging life. The expedition does not go as planned, and our friends are soon fighting for their lives.
The little monkey, Kong, is so cute. He is a terrific actor. The director did really well to focus on him so much. The monkey's facial expressions, chattering, his toting goods, and his obvious emotion should win him Best Supporting Monkey. He lent a great deal to the film.
The DVD extras have deleted scenes, trailers, and a featurette on how they made the anaconda effects as well as how the movie was made. The director and some of the actors speak about the making of the film.
I think we could have seen more snakes. I just wanted one final, big showdown with the anacondas.

Scrubs - The Complete Second Season (2001) Review

Scrubs - The Complete Second Season (2001)

Turn on your TV. Watch the same formulaic comedies day after day on the networks. Watch your intelligence quotient begin its downward spiral. Scared? Ok, now turn on Scrubs. Every so often a show comes along that breaks the network formula, and brings a richness to a genre that is sorely lacking in originality. Scrubs is that show, and has been for several years running.
Scrubs hooked me with the very first episode I ever saw. At first I was skeptical. Medical comedy, hmm Ok, there is going to be bad sophmoric humor and haven't we seen medical shows about a million times? Five minutes in, it hit me. This show was actually brilliant; Intelligent, quirky, and sometimes wacky humor coupled with real drama and tearful emotion and writing that continues to amaze week after week. At that moment, Scrubs inherited the void left by Seinfeld's departure as TVs best comedy.
The quirky nature of the writing, especially JD's fantasy sequences, improves in Season 2. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are far better, and far more comfortable, in their respective roles as JD, Turk, and Elliot than in Season 1. John C. McGinley is bar none the best actor on TV today as Dr. Cox. He becomes a more understandable and likeable character as this season progresses. And of course, Neil Flynn and his fantastically offbeat humor as JD's Janitor nemesis.
The season 1 finale left a lot of questions in the air. Would Carla and Turk resolve their problems and find happiness? Would JD and Elliot fall in love for real or are they destined for friendship? Most importantly, woud the father-son relationship between JD and Dr. Cox ever be the same? Season 2 resolves these questions fairly early, leaving the majority of the season devoted to pure laugh out loud moments and amazing guest stars like Heather Locklear, Tom Cavanaugh, Rick Shroeder, Jay Mohr, and the gorgeous Amy Smart as Tasty Coma Wife. The show seems to be successfully moving away from the gimmicky plot twists and each episode is a neatly comprehensive show. With shorter dramatic arcs, the humor and acting are center stage and the cast and crew sparkle. This set is a solid winner, with plenty of entertaining extras, and is an absolute must have for any Scrubs or TV comedy fan.

Will J.D. get together with Elliot, and will Carla finally accept Turk's wedding proposal? The wacky staff of Sacred Heart Hospital is back and they've brought along some guest stars (Heather Locklear, Tom Cavanagh, and John Ritter) for a booster shot of laughs. Enjoy all 22 episodes of SCRUBS sensational second season -- with the original, unedited music. Overflowing with great bonus features, including a one-on-one with John C. The best of Ripley's Believe It Or Not or so the label says.
Well, all I can say is if a tattooed man, followed by another tattooed man, followed by people that like to jump fences etc is the best, then I'm glad that I didn't watch most of this show's episodes. There is one shocking scene of a man that lost most of his face, but nothing remarkable otherwise.
I remember the original show which was much better than this newer on. That original version had far more substance where as this show is more of the sideshow tent variety. Not worth the money.

Stephen King Presents Kingdom Hospital: The Entire Series (2004) Review

Stephen King Presents Kingdom Hospital: The Entire Series (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let's clear up a misconception. "Kingdom Hospital" was created specifically as a limited series with a beginning, middle and end. Like "The Prisoner", King had envisioned it as a "true" novel for television. If ABC had chosen to renew it, King would have developed a series of different story arcs. So it wasn't cancelled so much as it concluded. Another point to clear up--King's series created in collaboration with co-writer Richard Dooling, director Craig Baxley, executive producer Mark Carliner was an attempt to graft King's unique sense of humor and horror to Lars Van Trier's original allowing it to reach an American audience better.
King's series is every bit as effective in its own way as Lars Van Trier's "The Kingdom" but one made for a very different audience. An American audience. Since Lars Van Trier was an executive producer on the series, I doubt that he would have given it his blessing if he didn't see King's version as a quirky complimentary vision to his own. A warning, though, about "Kingdom Hospital". This is a ghost story not a horror thriller. The show unfolds at a leisurely pace allowing the story to unfold gradually creating suspense vs. a rapid fire horror story. "Kingdom Hospital" has more in common with, say, "The Stand" or even "Twin Peaks" (and the original source mini-series as well) in that regard.
Anyhow, on to the DVD. Looks terrific and the CGI effects are top notch throughout most of the series. The campy over-the-top acting style of this "E.R." meets "Twin Peaks"series is crossed with King's twisted imagination. In the first episode we're introduced to most of the main characters at The Kingdom--Hook (Andrew McCarthy), Sally (Diane Ladd) the psychic who appears to be more than a few bricks shy of a full load, Jack (Peter Rickman)an artist who, due to a terrible accident, ends up at Kingdom (and is a stand-in so to speak for King in a bizarre collison between art and life). Oh and who can forget Stegman (Bruce Davison)who has an aura of...evil about him. All must help save Kingdom Hospital and a little girl who died on the same grounds the hospital is build on by the name of Mary. By the way, the number 19 shows up quite a bit in the series...linking it to King's The Dark Tower series.
The two hour pilot has an audio commentary by King, director Buxley, producer Carliner and the visual effects supervisor. There's also a number of great featurettes included on this four disc set including "Inside the Walls" which focuses on the making of the series, a discussion of the various characters,a discussion on the creation of the visual effects for the bizarre looking Antubis as well as a tour of the hospital. King also contributes a two page essay on the series in the booklet enclosed with the first two disc set. The transfer is in high definition so it looks amazingly sharp and crisp.
While the series doesn't quite live up to its potential by the conclusion, it's still a fascinating and fun ride while it lasts. It's not exactly a horror series per se more a glimpse into the haunted lives of those bound to serve in "the kingdom".

Kingdom Hospital is the first television series written and produced by Stephen King, the legendary master of horror. Kingdom Hospital is not like other hospitals - it is built on the wreckage of two horrific fires. The first fire, during the civil war, burned down the gates falls mill where small children toiled away under nightmarish conditions - nearly all of the long-suffering children were trapped and died in the fire. The second fire destroyed the "old Kingdom," a creepy hospital where an evil doctor performed hideous experiments on patients. The "new Kingdom" is the site of strange, paranormal phenomena, where the unquiet dead still roam.

The Cosby Show: Season 7 (2008) Review

The Cosby Show: Season 7 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cosby Show's seventh season premiered on September 20,1990 with the cast at its all-time largest. Erika Alexander joins as Clair Huxtable's(Phylicia Rashad) kid cousin Pamela Tucker who moves into the Huxtable household from a Brooklyn tenement. Pamela attends the same high school as the other Huxtable kids(except Rudy) did. Vanessa(Tempest Bledsoe),who went from the sophomore to the senior level during her high school years last season, leaves the Huxtable nest to attend Lincoln University. So 11-year-old Rudy(Keshia Knight Pulliam) is the only Huxtable kid left in the household(who hasn't yet left at all). Pamela occupied Vanessa's bedroom while Vanessa was away. Rudy and Olivia Kendall(Raven Symone) still share a bedroom and so do Olivia's father Martin(Joseph C. Phillips) and his wife, the former Denise Huxtable(Lisa Bonet). Theo(Malcolm Jamal Warner) is out of the Huxtable household again and back in his girlfriend Justine Phillips'(the late Michelle Thomas, recurringly). Martin half-humorously declined being given a bachelor party by Theo and Sondra's(Sabrina LeBeauf) husband Elvin Tibidaux(Geoffrey Owens). Denise, who thought Martin DID want it,was so angry with him. This results in mild arguments between the Tibidauxs and Cliff's(Bill Cosby) parents Russell(Earle Hyman, recurringly) and Anna(Clarice Taylor, recurringly). Clair believed Theo was the cause of the arguments. This happened at a backyard barbecue held at the Huxtable home(Cliff was grilling burgers and chickens). Rudy's friend Kenny(Deon Richmond, recurringly) attended the barbecue also. I believe the highest-rated episode this season was the one where the late great John Ritter and his not-yet-girlfriend/wife Amy Yasbeck guest-starred. Ritter was Ray Evans,a basketball coach with a pregnant wife(Yasbeck). In fact,Cosby and RS were the only cast members to appear in this episode(Cosby holds the record for appearing in every episode of the series). So Ray and his wife became parents and of course were congratulated by the doctor who delivered the baby,Cliff. There's also RETURN OF THE CLAIRETTES. They are Clair and an old girlfriend of hers who's married herself. The husband was played by none other then Phylicia's real-life(now-ex)husband,football great Ahmad Rashad. Silly Olivia once laundered her crayons in the Huxtables' washer(naturally, she took for granted that would be OK for the washable crayons). In the two-part season finale,Theo worked as a substitute teacher for special education students in spite of his dyslexia. You'll also see the Tibidauxs twins Winnie and Nelson again, now age 2. The other episodes are great. As for the opening montage, the one used for season 8 was filmed and intended to be used for this season. I'm sure we'll see the recycling of the season 6 opening and closing montages in this set, with a few changes in the credits, one of them being Alexander's inauguration. We will not hear Cosby quipping,"This is the best elevator music I ever heard",like we did in the season 6 opening. By the way, since one of the season 6 episodes premiered during the season 7 run on NBC,it will be included in this set(I don't know why it was delayed). This season finished at #5,a new low. Bonet was written out of the series for good after this season(she had been fired). Denise would only be mentioned from this point on. Also,Karen Malina White made a few recurring appearances during this season and the next/last. She would later become Mrs. Malcolm Jamal Warner, who himself was dating Thomas during this time.

Great show for my kids but also some in jokes for those of us who know the real Marvel characters and a couple of puns that will go right over kids' heads. My biggest and guess only complaint is that there is only 7 out of the 26 episodes from the first season. It appears to be the first seven episodes. The stories on the show are minimally based on any actual classic Marvel story (although the episode title screen is a re-imagined comic cover). Basic good guy vs. bad guy with main characters of Iron Man, Hulk, Surfer, Thor, Falcon, Wolverine, Reptil vs. Dr. Doom, Abomination and MODOK. A lot of esoteric guest characters and every character is given one obvious personality quirk. Again this is really for little kids but you'll laugh too.
The episodes are:
And Lo...A Pilot Shall Come!
This Silver, This Surfer!
Hulk Talk Smack!
To Err is Superhuman!
Enter: Dormammu!
A Brat Walks Among Us!
Oh Brother!
Also there's bonus features of an interview with Stan Lee, the video of the theme song and a trailer for the video game.

Having bought a "Best of TV Party" VHS a few years ago on Ebay, I was thrilled to see episodes finally being released on DVD and this full length documentary as well. Like Glenn O'Brien's film "Downtown '81", it really captures a moment in time when artists and rock stars converged together to create magic. If you are a Blondie fan then don't dare pass this up. Chris Stein & Deborah Harry are in it constantly! It's amazing that they were able to participate so heavily in the show as it ran during the height of their Blondie fame.
It's highly unlikely anything as cool as TV Party could ever happen again, which make this time machine all the better.

If you are expecting ruby slippers and a cackling green lady, you are in for an awakening of your own. Growing up with singing munchkins, I realized, hey, I am a grownup. And SciFi seemed to realize it too with a magnificent departure from the 1939 MGM film to a brilliant, futuristic, decadent, and sometimes apocalyptic telling. The reinventions of characters and fantastical sets soon transport you from the familiar to a place you find yourself hard to take your eyes off of-- from phosphorous-glowing trees, desolate paths, Metropolitan-like art deco palaces, and underworlds unlike anything and then again reminiscent of a certain alphabet city pre-Rudy.
The story itself is not for the kiddies. Mine were told continuously to leave the room, go play, and find something else to do. But the grown up fairy tale is long overdue. The story actually had twists, turns, and menacing meaning-- much more substance and meaning than the trifles the network and cable gurus seem to thrust down our throats.
I honestly cannot wait until the DVD comes out to feast my peepers on the rich masterpiece SciFi laid out for the holidays. (A much better smorgasborg than the Cheeto-fare of Lifetime).
And for just desserts-- SciFi scored an incredible coup with incredibly gifted actors perfectly tailored for each role-- most notably Alan Cumming for Glitch, Neal McDonough as the titular Tin Man, and the remarkable "evil" Azkadelia played by Kathleen Robertson.
Evil no longer is a personality trait to just carry a plot, but in this series, actually has a real beginning, reason to exist, and a true part in throughout the series up to the climatic end. This series is like a force of nature that I found myself carried away in-- somewhat like DG.

The West Wing: The Complete Series Collection (2006) Review

The West Wing: The Complete Series Collection (2006)

The West Wing is by far the best television series I've ever seen. 5 stars for that. However this set, although nice to look at, has too many flaws for me to recommend it very highly. 3 stars for this set.
My main gripe is that there are no English subtitles. Why not? There is plenty of space on the disks and subtitles don't take up that much. The gain would be far greater than the cost!
I often have to rewind episodes three or four times to catch a phrase that I can't quite make out hearing the first or second time. There is often so much background noise (sirens, crouds, music, etc) that one can't make out all the brilliant dialogue by only listening to the audio.
The UK editions have English subtitles, so why can't the American versions?
Another gripe is the packaging. While it is very nice to look at on the shelf, cleverly designed with file folders holding each season, it is impractical and scratches the disks! The folders are hard cardboard and the slits (not even lined with felt or soft material) are so narrow you have to really press the disks in, damaging and scratching them up!
The UK boxed set uses 22 slimline DVD cases, holding two discs each, all packaged within season-by-season slip cases.
If your DVD player can play European DVD's, I recommend paying a little extra and ordering the UK version instead: ASIN B000I8OC08 on Amazon.co.uk. It has the same 21+ hours of extras this set has so you won't be missing anything except the booklet and script, which frankly doesn't add much value.
EDIT: As somebody kindly pointed out in the comments, seasons 1-5 have subtitles. Only seasons 6 & 7 are without English subs. Also, if you do consider buying the UK edition, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A REGION FREE DVD PLAYER, or that your player can play European DVD's. Read the comments to this review for tips on how to check your player. Thanks for voting and commenting! :)
